the thing is that I would like to get a 845 set made in japan
or usa - but that puts me in the $3500 used / $5000 new
range. I would love to buy a dehavilland but there again
$5000 and I have a teenager to pay for!what to do?
maybe a kit from Japan?

I thought you were more than pleased with your little Almarro. A nice amp by most accounts - your impressions were glowing (er, excuse the unintentional pun). Have your circumstances changed? As far as the relative costs of equipment from different countries is concerned, perhaps you might like to consider value. A $300 (plus delivery and duties) amp that likely presents music in a mediocre manner, is possibly unreliable, perhaps unsafe, not covered by warranty, etc. does not represent value - especially if you already own something that likely sounds 'better'. Of course, the concept of value includes factors that vary from person-to-person, so therefore is a personal thing.
I support most of what Thomas says in his post; it is the consideration of these types of factors I alluded to in my post below. You have a choice, which you will make based on many factors. I choose to factor in some broader social (no, not socialist with its attendant connotations) responsibility, as that is important to me. I like to think I place people's long-term wellbeing before my continuous, resource-wasting, bank account busting, ultimately unrewarding, consumption of short-lived crap. Conscious rather than conspicuous consumption?
Best of fortune in your search…

my feelings about the ALMARRO a205a still hold true.BUT I have sold the unit because I need more power.
At 5 watts it needs 97db speakers which I do not have at this time.for the money I hold the ALMARRO in very high praise.
with the 845 amps there seems to be no middle ground
as you can purchase a cheap amp for china for $400
or to get an american amp it is 10x the price!I am planning to try to find a used 845 de havilland if I can get
a good deal or maybe a bel canto
I thought I'd pass on a little note. I currently use the Belcanto SET40 which is a stereo amp single ended 845's driven by 12ax7's. Capable of 35 watts rms/70 peak with only two stages. I'm driving Dunlavy SCIV's 91db sensitivity with excellent results. Great frequency extremes, wonderful midrange, great beautiful amp. I've had for several years and never given any thought as to replacing them. The rest of my system is Linn LP12/ARO/BenzMO.9, Artemis Labs PH-1 phono stage, First Sound Presence Audio Deluxe Line Stage.
I understand. Used may be a good way to go... shame you could not get some inexpensive effecient spks to with your Alamrro - though perhaps you found some less efficient spks that you really like...Anyhow, best of fortune in your search.
Regards
Raymond
