Yes, I do have a pair of vintage JBL/Horn speakers that is about 99db efficient. I've heard a vintage Magnavox SE 84 and am not very impressed with it. I had a chance to listen to a 45, 300B, 2A3 and 45 is more suited to my ears. I think I will keep an eyes for a used beatup 45........ Thanks.

tnc,If you have a budget of $500.00 and you are a newby, try listening to a well designed SET EL84 amp. The Mag that you listened to almost certainly used NFB to deal with the non-linearity of the pentode. There is no argument concerning the sound of a 45(2 watt) or 300B(8 watt)but you might be waiting for a while for a sound $500.00 DHT amp. I don't want to start a debate but you can get good sound from 2 watts and 92db/watt@1m loud speakers IMHO.
If you're not totally opposed to DIY, I would build something with decent output transformers like the James and use the 45 tube, it is a very articulate, detailed and magical tube. Be aware of course that you will only get about a watt and a half or so. If you want details on an easy to build amp contact me offline, keeping in mind that I had no experience at all until about a year ago. Could be built for $500-700 range and would be a lot of fun!
I would be interested. please email me or provide me with your email. Thanks.
