I received a set of these tubes last week. The sound that I'm getting is nice but they seem to have considerably more hum than my Sovtek or RCAs. I can hear almost no hum at the woofer from the Sovtek or RCAs, so I wondering what would make brand new tubes have such a undesirable hum? During quiet passages the hum is too noticeable to ignore. An audio buddy of mine suggested pinching the tube pins a bit to attempt to get a better contact with the pin sockets.
I'm open for suggestions.
oh, my amps are Wright Sound Company WPA 3.5 2A3 monos.
Follow Ups:
I installed a quad of the 2a3C's in my Kondo Neiro, and yes, they growl quite a bit if your ear is in the cone and put a cozy sort of "old radio" sound in the background when you're listening. Musically they're "quieter" than the Sovteks, though -- less ringing and (much) more "true" detail -- e.g. you hear the flute vibrating instead of the tube. More realism, better "image density," more depth, tone that's "gorgeous" not because it's overdone but because it sounds more like the real. They're nice. Also, they phrase better than the Sovteks. Still, this begs the question of what a more "finished" product like the EML single plates could do. Coming full circle now, the Sovteks are truly great some of the time...
on most all SET amps. Perhaps someone the has your amps will respond to your post.
Nope, not on these. Ole George didn't add them because he felt most NOS and Sovtek tubes have decent enough tube construction.
All triode tube hums. Most good SET amps do have hum pot. Adjusting the pot you may get a dead queit for the Sungang 2A3C
There is an upgrade available for these from George Wright, I think I may do that.
Adjust your hum pot.
From my understanding there are no hum pots on the Write 2a3 mono amps. They are self biasing.I'll contact Write Sound.
hum pots don't adjust bias- they simply adjust for imbalance in the heater so the two halves of it can ideally cancel each other in the hum dept. (be 'humbuckers' for Gibson fans)
