I just snagged a set of Cicadas from ebay, and need recommendations for a good SET to drive them. I would like to keep it under $1000, the more under the merrier, as I am on a pretty tight budget. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. The Cicada is rated at 12 ohms nominal, with 94 db sensitivity. Craig says 6 watts should do the trick.
Follow Ups:
Congrats on snagging a pair of Cicadas. I've owned a pair for about 5 years. I use a Moth 300B amp rated at 10 watts to power mine and have been satisfied. I thought I would pass on to you some additional information which might be helpful.Although the Cicadas were rated at 94 db sensitivity by the factory, reviews published at the time of their introduction rated them at 92 db. I talked with some of the staff of Moth (C. Uthus and R. Escamillo) before purchasing my amp and speakers, and they felt that their 2A3 amp would only be a good match to the Cicadas in a small room. They sold both amps, at nearly the same price, so I don't feel they were just trying to get me to spend more money.
I was given the chance to purchase the speakers used in the 2001 review done by the now-defunct Listener magazine (by Art Dudley, as I recall), but I passed on the offer. Those particular speakers were finished in a very irregularly-textured black polymer instead of the shiny, burgandy-colored speakers which actually became the production standard. My speakers are serial no. 000112 and retailed for $500 a pair.
I hope this information was at least somewhat interesting/helpful to you.
Thank you for the info. I just received my cicadas today, but the only amp I have to drive them is a 100w adcom 545 that I have lying around, totally overkill. I would really love to hear the SET magic with the cicadas. When I talked with Craig, he did mention that the 2A3 might not have enough wattage for personal taste, but I am blessed with a small room. The cicadas you speak of with the different color are made from a different materil, the same stuff they use for automotive truck bed lining, which is supposed to be more durable and sound better than the chinese mdf on our burgundy colored sets. Craig gave me the heads up that if you ever see those, snag them.
amplifier should make you proud. I really don't think
the extra 3dB of a 300B amp is needed or,
frankly, gives you much anything other than additional
expense, less attractive tube choices, and likely less
well rounded sonics.Do everyone a favor, and DON'T buy a chinese made amp.
Plenty of good American, Japanese, European designs for
around $2000, and people actually can afford to live on
something other than dirt floors with the wages they earn
constructing them.Good Luck,
