There have been various opinions of different generations of WE 3OOB's, since Im contemplating upgrading my tubes, but havn't seen too many express there experience with the new productions from october 2004 in alabama. I was wondering how people feel about them
Follow Ups:
I personally still like the vintage better, but the Bama ones are very nice too. My hunch is most of the vintage specimens people are comparing the new productions to are used tubes. I do find the new productions a little more "linear," but the vintage ones has an indescribably wonderful tonality to them.
Seems to me that the general agreement is that the new ones from the Alabama plant are the best ones ever. I have three sets, here at the moment and I'd rank them the Alabama plant best, next a pair of new old stocks that cost way to much, but the amp manf. sent them so I sure listened to them. Third, but not a big difference was a pair that's about 3 years old.
I believe it sounds different but it is a matter of taste.Nonetheless buying New WE 300B gives you the comfort of buying (warranty, etc) and perhaps better sound for most people.
I am running a pair of WE 300B's made in June 2006 in my ASL AQ-1005DT's. The sound is excellent and the build quality appears to be superb. My only problem (and maybe it is not a problem) is that I cannot turn up the bias up to the manufacturer's recommended 650 mV. They run at about 600 mV. I had the same problem with a pair of TJ 300B meshplates (which, I am told, are not a drop-in 300B replacement). Curiously, EH 300B's can be biased to 650 mV in my amp. Maybe my amp's bias circuit needs fixing, maybe not.
Mayanitis,All the new production tubes are pretty much the same since they where reserected. The new tubes differ from the old ones only in the vacuum area, all other parts are stright of the original plans. Most of the parts and the filaments are made by the same companies as before.
The vacuum is much better which I think makes the sound of these much better than NOS ones. I have proabably 20 NOS ones and don't find them anywhere near the new ones.
All my products are sold with which ever tube they want. I have not sold anything but WE300B's in my amps for proabably 10 years.
Any idea what kind of life expectancy, in hours, they have, Gordo?Mahalo,
Poinz,It really depends on the circuit but I would say it would exceed 10K hours.
You really have to make sure that the filament comes up 15 seconds before the B+. That is why I use the 5AR4 for most of my 300B circuits. Most 274's come up too fast, though they seem to sound better.
