In theory, if the driver stage has the balls to drive the 845 into A2 operation, it could exceed the 30w max rating for A1 use on the 845. However, the 845 is not prone to going into A2, doesn't like to be there, and likely will have other issues if in fact it ever does get there. So, theoretically it's possible to get more than 26-30w, however in reality it remains to be seen if that is really the case. Designing good amps that can handle A1 and A2 operation is not trivial, esp. from the point of view of the driver stage.
Follow Ups:
and I'll (respectfully) respond that 845s have no problem going to A2 on peaks. Granted they need a very good driver stage but I've been doing it for years and they sound and measure just fine. In fact my amps measure better at near full tilt than many SE845s I've seen running at half the power in A1 with an almost identical harmonic spectrum in A2 compared to A1.I'm sorry but I'll also keep saying that it doesn't have to be about running them flat out all of the time, it's about dynamic headroom and low distortion while they are in A1 ... which is after all, most of the time.
Ed you are right I think,
the 805 is not in pure class A1 all the way to 50watts. It does switch modes above I think mid 25watt range into A2 mode.
Ed I believe this is what Dennis has done. I remember reading that somewhere. I can really hear the difference when I max the volume, when the amp goes into A2. The sound is not nearly as good. The amps have *plenty* of power without having to go that far, and they can absolutely rock the house without pushing them that hard. Listening at A2 levels, is loud enough to cause hearing damage...just not necessary. Having the right speakers is important.
