I would like to know about the noise issues for the Fi "Y" preamp and if you can post photos of the X and the Y. Thanks.
Follow Ups:
There are a few pictures of the Fi Y and Super X posted in my Audiogon system . Both the Y and X have tbe special order handpolished finish and are really beautiful. This is still by far the best sounding combo I tried on the Abbys. It has a tigher bass than any other tube unit I tried, I lively sound with lots of drive. I do not notice any power limitation in my system in a medium sized room. piano is presented with impact and verve, capturing particualry well all the details and mechanics of the piano. I don't think I heard piano with more realism in other systems.
As for noise, the Super X is very quiet by itself but in combination with the Y I do get some light hum and tube rushing noise. Some of this is due to the high gain of the Y (23dB!!), but part seems to be inherent in the design that makes it more sensitive to noisy tubes. Using very quiet tubes and power conditioner, nois is now so far down that I don't notice it at my seating position, 6ft away from my 95dB efficient Abbys. Also, if you order a Fi Y from Don, ask him to attenuate 2-3 inputs by more that he does usually (two of my inputs are attenuated by 8dB, which results in still too much gain for my CDP with 2.3V output)
The noise and the high gain are about the only downsides for the Fi combo (well, the missing remote maybe).
Feel free to drop me an email anytime. I have a few more pictures available for the Fi. We can even chat over the phone, if you like some more impressions.
All the best,
Rene

Thanks for the info. I have been debating on Don's equipment for a long time. I think they are true works of art. I tried to send you an e-mail but you don't accept e-mail according to your info at this AA. Have you run any 45's in your X ? Also is there a version of a "super" Y ?
I think they are true works of art.
I can only second that. I don't think there is any better looking Audio equipment out there.
I haven't tried 45 tubes yet, although I would love to try some.
There isn't really a Super Y, although Don has been changing parts and doing improvement over the years in the Y. Don thought that mine is already using the best parts he can put into it. It has silver or rhodium RCA connections instead of the older gold ones; all silver wiring inside and upgraded resistors etc. Also, since mine even has the handpolished finish he suggested calling it a Super Y. The only thing Don can't upgrade is the potentiometer, since the narrow chassis design doesn't allow a deeper upgraded pot.
Also, I just dropped you an email with my email address etc...

While not a "Super Y" Don has a line stage preamp with a conventional chassis and a full function preamp. He sent me pricing and photos several months ago. I'm not sure but the line stage I think was around $1800 or so and the full function preamp maybe $2400 or so.I'm sure Don can provide photos and pricing.
Talking to Don, there is a new Fi full function in the works, that will be based on a multi-level chassis similar to the Fi WE421:
Also, 6 moons mentioned the new Pre in the writup about the WE421. The older Fi is based more on the conventional chassis similar to the 2A3 monos. The new one should be very interesting....

Recent communications with him indicate that the full function pre is still not quite ready....he's a busy guy. It will have provisions for both MM and MC. No pricing that I'm aware of, but I can imagine it will be quite a bit more than his current fare. I could be making this up, but I swear I read that his last full-function pre (the one used by A. Dudley at one time) was ~$4000 back in the 90's. I, too, await with great interest, and am likely to drop some coin when this one surfaces.Cheers
Hi Rene,Thanks so much. I have sent you one before I read this here. I appreciate your help. Thanks
Hi,
If you want the benefit of better bass and slightly lower noise from your tubes try Mapleshades Heavyfeet...incredible improvement!
