I've been running new-prod Chinese 845 for awhile now and am "satisfied". I have stayed away from the NOS stuff due to the extreme prices. Are they worth it at all, at at least 3x the price? What is the consensus?
Follow Ups:
What Ed says is very true, but don't overlook the other tubes in your amp as well. Upgrading the gain and driver tubes may make even larger improvements, depending on what's in those positions now. Many foreign built 845 amps come with cheap gain and driver tubes which can be replaced by decent NOS for a whole lot less than the cost of a NOS pair of 845's.

Boo!
Actually, my Consonance Cyber monos came with some decent NOS 6922s and 5687s, and I've rolled them both quite a bit as well. I find mostly subtle effects there, and nothing substantially better than what was supplied. I don't go for the high-dollar NOS stuff, though. Don't think I paid more than $60/pair for any of these signal tubes.
I think so. I use the Shuguang (SuperTNT) 845M and B for casual listening, but the NOS does bring something more to the table. Yes, they aren't cheap, but they also only appreciate in value.
Ed, has Shuguang solved the low output problem in the 845M tube?
Well, they appreciate if you don't use them. :-} Value's based on how they test, right? They wear out.If you could elaborate on the improvements over the Chinese tubes that would be great.
well, certainly NOS appreciates more than used ones, but they wear slowly. Even used ones retain a lot of their value.Feel free to look up posts here on the search system - I have written extensively on NOS vs. Chinese in the past I think. (reviews, etc.)
still, if you can find them (at a price you are willing to pay), the NOS has no peer.
Maybe this belongs in "Tubes Asylum" but I think many here would be interested. BTW, what is your absolute favourite and why?
