I'm using RCA 5814A's with good results. The AX7's have been subbed with 6829's and the rectifier is a 274B from Shuguang. These and the mods from Response Audio make this my top preamp. Have fun.

HiThanks for the info...I am intrigued by your use of 6829s in place of the 12x7...Does the standard (pre modification) circuitry allow for this too?I thought the 6829s were subs for 12AT7s.
They are 12AV7's; mu is about 50, half an AT7, but 70% more than AU7's. The circuit seems to like it in my modded Ming Da. No troubles and nearly continuous use for 3 months. I never tried it in an unmodded version, but my guess is that there should be no trouble, just a bit more gain.
Sorry, I meant a little less gian (than the 12AX7's).
