Anybody tried putting the JJ 300B on the Cary 805 AE? I heard that the JJ 300B has a wider base and as the stock Cary/300B-98C tube is an exact fit, I'm curious if the JJ will fit. Any impressions soundwise too? Sorry, I have no way to try this. Thanks so much in adavance!

Thanks guys for all the info. Very much appreciated!
Thanks elektron. That is quite unfortunate as I was more or less decided on the JJ. Any idea on what would be a good replacement for the JJ, or at least approximate its sound, that will fit in the Cary's? Thanks!
lrdc, hi. Ask Cary if the CAD-805 can accept JJ tubes through the chassis hole. Who knows? The 805 may be able to do it. If it were my amps I would do the change to flush mount sockets. It is not complicated or difficult to do. I like the JJ tubes enough that that a minor socket adjustment wouldn't deter me from using them. I ordered my first pair of the JJ 300B as a test. After I heard them and also saw how stable they were there was no question of going back. When I owned a pair of the CAD-805 I don't think the JJ were available. The JJ beat Cetron, =C= Svetlana, and all the Sino stuff I've tried. I have not done a head to head with Lee's Summit MO manufactured WE or the WE of current manufacture.
I use the Full Music 300B/n in my Cary 805 with excellent result. I also have a pair of WE 300B and I prefer the Full Music 300B/n. The Full Music 300B/n is also sold under the TJ house brand name. Please see the following link for a 300B shoot out http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1201/300b/I bought my 300B/n from http://www.supertnt.com/. While you are at it, you might want to pick up a pair of Super TNT metal plate 845 (they use to be labeled 845M, but I think the newer tubes are now labeled 845C). Excellent tube. I like the 845B tube also. Both tubes are substantially better than the stock Cary 845. I have never tried any of the KR products i.e. 300B or 845.
Pardon the toobie noobie question, but what's the difference between 300B and 300B/n? (What does the "/n" designate?)
The Full Music 300B/n is the mesh Plate 300B with gold pins and a ceramic socket. You can check out the various Full Music 300B at http://www.fullmusic.de/datasheets/overview.htm
Brent,
Thanks for the info. However, the links on the Full Music page to the datasheets for the 300B and 300B/n both point to exactly the same file, so there's no difference in specs. Does anybody know if "/n" just indicates mesh plate, or is something else different between the two?
It has been a while since I visited the Full Music website. When I bought my tubes, Full Music offerred the following:300B - solid plate
300B - mesh plate
300B/n - mesh plate with ceramic base and gold pins
300B/n Gold - meshplate with ceramic base, gold pins and gold plated gridIt would appear that suffix "n" is now used to denote the mesh plate and that they no longer offer a nickel pined mesh plate 300B
Thanks for the clarification
lrdc, hi. As measured here the JJ 300B is a mm or two larger than the typical plastic UX4 type tube base. In a CARY CAD-300SE Sig which has recessed sockets the JJ base won't go through the hole to reach the socket. I remember the CAD-805 as being similar. One can replace the original suspended sockets with ones that are flush with the surface thus solving the problem. This I did with a pair of 300SE Sigs. The sockets CARY used were ceramic wafer sockets - looking to be Sino. This is a minor problem JJ can address when it orders new UX4 pin tube bases in the future. I hope JJ does cuz a lot of CARY owners could benefit from the JJ 300B and probably won't want to go through the minor inconvenience of replacing tube sockets.
