This, the second album from SOTL is just out.
I find it hard to describe... perhaps an Arvo Part piece set adrift from the spaceship in 2001 and drifting through space.
The music implies more than is perhaps present but that may be its great triumph.
The almost static electronics are subtly joined by strings, horns and a choir.
I keep finding myself hearing melodies that I don't think are on the disc, but it seems to expand limitlessly.
I think it's very lovely music.
There is a site atwww.brainwashed.com/sotl
The music and news links don't seem to go anywhere, so just listen to the music as the site opens and maybe you will get a small idea.
Or go here
www.kranky.net
Click on the link to the album and play the MP3 of Apresludes.
Follow Ups:
Not wanting to sound contrary, but Stars of the Lid have released seven albums. Thanks for the review of the new one though, I'll have to pick it up. They certainly have a unique approach to songwriting - very ethereal.
I haven't heard (of) them.
I only discovered SOTL a year or so ago.
I know the offshoot projects but not any other records under their name.
Thanks for the heads up, I shall go searching. The new one is very good.
I supposed they only had the previous one after a radio guy said he wanted to play the new one but it hadn't arrived and so we would have to make do playing the other one again...
Not many programmes play their music...
Hi Dave, I have two earlier records - "Gravitational pull vs the desire for an aquatic life" & "Music for nitrous oxide" - both fit your description of the new release. They are also both on suitably obscure indie labels (Kranky & Sedimental). Having said that, you shouldn't have too much difficulty tracking them down.
I find myself constantly discovering "new" bands, only to discover they have five or more albums out. My latest was 'Of Montreal', I had never heard of them until the latest record, and loe and behold they have nine previous releases!
The latest SOTL is also on Kranky.
Do you know Qua?
They are playing a surround sound event here this week with suggestions to bring cushions as the audience will all be lying on the floor.
Hi Dave,
No, I have never heard of Qua. Are they an offshoot of SOTL? By the sound of the concert, they ought to be :)
... they could/should be.Try here and download a track or two...
Thanks Dave. I'll give them a listen.
