Brief, interesting article on Joni Mitchell, who seems to be over it.

...it's some of the best stuff ever written and recorded. While I completely understand her hatred of the "starmaking machinery" and the music biz generally, I consider her contention that there's no good music today to be absolute rubbish. There's spectacular stuff in every available genre and category. I feel bad for her if she can't or won't "hear" it. Reminds me of my 4-year-old who won't try new foods and has about 5 things in his culinary repertoire.Although I continued to buy most of her records up to the point she stopped releasing new material, I don't think she made a flat out great record after Hejira, which is the mid-70s. So for her to be passing this kind of judgment on the rest of the musical world annoys me.
I didn't read that she has any contention that there's no good music today in anything she said, just that she came to hate music, mainly do to her music biz experiences. She doesn't really make any distinction between good or bad music, just that she hated it. Sounds like she was very burned out.I agree about Hejira, probably my favorite of her recordings. It will be interesting to hear a new recording from her, as a songwriter time could be on her side. With all that smoking though, she may sound a bit rough around the edges!

...in the article you cited: "That's the trouble with now. Now we've got a horrible culture, horrible times and horrible music."She may have been exaggerating for effect, but that doesn't seem too open to interpretation. I've seen her quoted in similar veins before.
You're right, that really isn't open to interpretation! I didn't pay much attention to that one line... In that case she probably should have expanded on her thoughts and just have said "I came to hate life!"As you said in your original post there IS plenty of good, nee, great music being made if one just puts a little effort into seeking it out.
Certainly life can't be as bad as that one statement by her would indicate! She does seem prone to more than a bit of the exaggeration, though.
