In Reply to: Why is it that Matthew Sweet, as good a pop artist as we've produced, never posted by tinear on March 13, 2007 at 12:14:56:
Because his lyrics are weak.
Follow Ups:
Yeah, his lyrics are not nearly as good as "Don't worry-be happy" That one got a Grammy, as I recall.
"Here's a little song I wrote, you might want to sing it note for note: don't worry, be happy" Deep stuff.
Who gives a crap about the lyrics? He's written great songs and should be way bigger than he is. But the world loves and rewards dreck. Same goes for guys like Tommy Keene , Richard X. Heyman and Dwight Twilley for that matter. Those guys have never gotten the public accolades that they have deserved for a body of great music.
Personally, I don't think his lyrics are weak, especially compared to the tripe that more popular singers like John Mayer or James Blount put out. Here's one clue as to why Sweet's not popular: One of his best songs his called "Sick of Myself". Ain't the same sentiment as "You're Beautiful" and "Your Body Is A Wonderland". Excuse me now while I throw up on my keyboard.
Agreed, his lyrics are lame, his melodies are great
When I'm in that kind of mood I much prefer John Wesley Harding or The Bongos/Richard Barone.
the lyrics rap on him. I mean, how many pop songs are profound?
Boy meets girl, gets her...or doesn't. End of story.
