Roky is off the elevator, but on the way back upJoel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic

Roky Erickson in San Francisco to play the Noise Pop Fest... Roky Erickson had his first Bay Area show in more than 25...Roky Erickson starring at this week's Noise Pop Festival is not just another surprising comeback for a deserving rocker, but almost a victory over evil. Erickson returns to San Francisco 40 years after he first arrived in town, and he finally is pieced back together -- a whole man, free from demons that have plagued him most of his adult life.

Follow Ups:
You can catch a rare television performance of the 13th Floor Elevators performing "You're Gonna Miss Me" on American Bandstand from October 29, 1966. A very young (17 year old) Roky Erickson is singing and playing guitar and harmonica. The performance was buried for decades, supposedly never to be released *, but at least for now you can still watch it online. It is an amazing performance.* Still lost to time, the post-performance band interview where Dick Clark asks the guys, "Who is the head of this band?" and Tommy Hall answers, "We're all heads, Dick."
Only Roky Erickson I have is Don't Slander Me from the 80s and some Elevators stuff on compilations. I've played the hell outta Don't Slander Me, but never seem to happen across any of his other stuff. I'm gonna have to keep my eyes a little more open.
a 4CD box set on the Decal Label. There are what I believe are their first 3 albums and a live one.
I also like the tribute album, Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye
Stu Cook from Creedence Clearwater produced this pictured album in 1980. I have the vinyl and it is... IMHO... the best of his work....
Two Headed Dog & I Walked With a Zombie....sweet jaysus, they ain't writing them like that anymore.
Evil One [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED]
now a 2 CD set with a bunch of added content.....
35 songs, 2nd disc from a live show in 1979...Wahooooo
Now I just gotta decide between looking for the old vinyl or grabbing the reissue.
I know I'm late to the party, but what the hell. I had no knowledge of the whole Texas psych scene and the 13th Floor Elevators until about a month ago when I saw a post on Steve Hoffman's forum with a story about the original tape - and the YouTube link. Watched the video and read a little about the rip off of their material. And now, this story. What an incredible tale.
keep on pimpin'
.
They materialized in Texas, Austin and Houston 65-68, a Texas band
with special links to the Bay Area via Chet Helms. The greatest band
there ever was, far too cool for the likes of you. I think your
implant may be acting up again: isn't it supposed to disable you at
2%?
and much of the cultural riches it has to offer and that transpire here, I'm sure this bastion of delights would just dry up and blow away. Then you'd have even more time to fumble about in your briefs...
"I always play jazz records backwards, they sound better that way"
-Thomas Edison
Now I keep thinking of it...
NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
This must mean the time he spent living in Pittsburgh. The entire area's contact with the real world is tenuous at best.
Glad to see he's going well. I have two of his albums on LP and treasure them.
