original recording artist?
"Bad Case of Loving You" by Robert Palmer is anemic compared to the rocking Moon Martin original. Same for "Cadillac Walk" by Moon.
Moon, in fact, is one of the greatest "unknown" artists of American music--- kind of a crazy mix of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.
His first two cds are chock full of great songs.
Lucinda Williams is as good a writer/performer as he but, lucky for her, she broke through.
Moon always has been eclipsed.
Follow Ups:
Of course the Stones were superlative at this point of their career but the directors of "The Sopranos" used Eric Burdon & Wars cover as closing credits music last week. Burdon was no slouch covering Beatles or Stones
Chris Farlowe's version.
Hell, just sticking with the them of Robert Palmer ruining songs, how about Power Station's big hit with T Rex's Bang a Gong? Allthough the T. Rex version was a hit as well, so maybe not really what you're looking for.
I think Bruce Springsteen's original is MUCH better than Manfred Mann's; but it was the latter that became a big hit.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the greatest cover song of all time....
.
The man wrote some great stuff, but it seemed to have always taken a cover artist to get a hit. His originals were very good.
I don't think that answered the question that was asked. If you're thinking of Pretty Woman, however, I think that *would* answer the question; i.e. I think Orbison's version was much better than VH's. (of course they were both "hits", so maybe it doesn't qualify regarding what the questioner was trying get at).
Fleetwood Macs (Peter Greens) version of "Black Magic Woman" always seemed better than Santana's to me. Even tho Santana's recording quality is superior.

Maybe too tough on him, but he never did JJ Cale like JJ Cale did.
.
Much better and way more soulful than Elvis'.
Joke. You showed me how to by the Turtles was better than the Byrds'. Hey Joe by the Leaves. Hurry Sundown, the Outlaws. Truly Right by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

I was cavorting around London when Palmer died, an there it was a major news story, shock like Elvis died, and of course everyone wondered, how did he die so young??
Good God, whatta talent. For 7 years I've been surfing music sites and it's been worth it if for no other reason than discovering Lucinda via another music bored. I'm not sure if she's _really_ broken through, with the masses at least, but certainly has with the critics. Her one big hit, Passionate Kisses, maybe was covered better by Mary Chapin Carpenter and possibly her minor hit, Sweet Old World, was covered better by EmmyLou. But damn, whatta freekin great songrwiter. Her voice could be considered an acquired taste, by some at least, but once you get over that hump it's goosebump time. And what melodies to accompany the lyrics. I think it's World Without Tears on 2LP tonight. Wife hates her FWIW.
than the hit version by MC Carpenter. Btw, Lucinda has moved out here and her new cd, "West" is a killer.

"Occasionally we list eccentrically, all sense of balance gone."
Decent songwriter, fair artist. Don't get the hype, but then I don't get most of the Americana hype these days
your assertion that "Sweet Old World" was better covered by Emmylou. I adore Emmylou, but her version is just a little too pretty. Lucinda's version will break your heart.
