...both Rice and Rowan are extraordinary talents. I heard Bryn Davies, the bass player was leaving. They have the ability to be virtuosos, but remaining silky smooth and musical. With Tony Rice material, I like the mostly instrumental material. My favorite stuff of his is the stuff done with "The Unit", "Backwaters" being my favorite. Manzanita is also masterful. The collaborations with Norman Blake are quite good also. I know one of TR's Martins is a special collectible that was owned by someone famous, but it escapes me right now.
I also heard somewhere that TR has/had cancer. Is that true?

Follow Ups:
the guitar was owned by Clarence White!! Once of the Byrds and before that with his brother Roland in the Kentucky Colonels.....their landmark album ......Appalachian Swing....is a necessary addition to any fan of world class picking.
Nice to see these old guitars being played. Neil Young has Hank Williams old axe and plays it often (and well too). You can see it in the DVD Heart of Gold.
Followed your link - wow, what a collection of powerhouse musicians. Too many to list. This gives me a good idea for a vacation week in October. Thanks.

A gift from a nice billionaire. He loves Bluegrass and wishes to spread the joy. I have been to all of them and boy oh boy, I am up to my eyeballs in joy. Let me know if you are coming, I'll buy the pizza . I stay in the city on Saturday night and if I go to the pre-concert party I stay on Friday too. I'll let you know where you can get a room and we can meet up.....
Mark your calendar, it is the absolute best musical event in America....
Way beyond Bluegrass now.....
LWR, this sounds like my kind of fun, and what a wondeful city SF is. My fiance and I have been wanting to go to SF, and this event would help fill the week out nicely. She says she likes the idea. It would be fun to meet up should we decide to go and enjoy some live music and festivities. I'll let you know if we decide to go, but you'd have to let me call you something other than LWR, heh heh. Thanks for extending the hospitality :)

Tony's brother, Larry, passed away last year. Mesothelioma. Tony is certainly looking gaunt these days, but I've not heard any credible reports that he's ill. I sure hope he's not. He's a genius. His solo on Moonlight Midnight makes me want to never touch my guitar again.
I can't find anything on Tony. I thought I'd heard something when Tony was passing through Havre De Grace, MD last summer. Sorry to alarm anyone.

the version on the new album is the finest of the many I have heard him play...Tony is the finest accoustic guitar player in America....
