I have always thought she was an undiscovered or in fact lost talent, but Rhino is issuing a career length retrospective which might be an interesting intro for new comers.
Samples are available at the site.
My favourites are the Farewell Aldebaran album with Jerry Yester and the Rosebud album with Yester and others which followed it, although its a long time since I heard Farewell Aldebaran. I got my hands on a copy of Rosebud a year or so ago and it is just as good as I remember it.
Follow Ups:
swagger and bravado and balls to the wall voice.
Loose in the World, her 1999 comeback album is super, a good starting place. Or, at your link listen to I Wish I had My Old Guitar, my favorite song by her. That album is produced by Craig Doerge, her husband and co-performer as well as a movie soundtrack writer. He has also played on tons of other albums since the 60-70s.
Judy inspired the early Jefferson Airplane with her version of High Flying Bird. IMHO, she is a national treasure.
What a set of pipes.
...hang on to it. It's not likely that the full album will ever see a legit reissue, at least not as long as Gail and the Zappa clan have control over the Bizarre/Straight catalog.* So you'll either have to make do with the Radioactive CD bootleg, or find an original. Ever since Richie Unterberger featured the record in one of his books, original copies have started to go for anywhere between $40-$100 or so. FA's not my favorite album by a long shot, but you could do a lot worse... there aren't that many albums in the same bag.
*Sadly, the same fate has befallen Tim Buckley's Starsailor, Tim Dawe's Penrod, Permanent Damage by the GTOs, and many other worthy albums on the label. All, however, are worth tracking down...
He comes over every Saturday night and we drink Irish whiskey and
smoke whatever beckons us and talk and listen to music accompanied
by cheesy horror movies with the sound off from the SciFi channel.
Anyway, he asks if I have any Judy Henske: he just heard what he
thought was an excellent CD. And so.... Is it not too amazing who
makes it and who does not? Good post, Davidius, thanks for the tip.
