...Brian Wilson with Al Jardine doing Pet Sounds. Since this may be his last performance of this, I hope some of you had the opportunity to see this tour.First, I graduated from high in 1965 when the Beach Boys and Beatles were battling back and forth for number one.
I've seen the Beach Boys three times - the whole touring band in 1983 or so just before Dennis died, and the Mike Love/Bruce Johnston poor imitations twice, once with Carl before he died of cancer.
This performance was amazing - a 10 piece group backing Brian. 'Good Vibrations' was incredible. He got a standing ovation after 'God Only Knows'.
Brian was a little shaky at times, but who cares.
And they played just about every Beach Boy song you can think of and some you didn't.
Follow Ups:
Haven't seen that BW is or will be on the East Coast any time soon. The Beach Boys were my 1st concert here in Pittsburgh back in the mid 60's. By the way, I just finished the recent BW biography "Catch A Wave". A really fascinating book that is hard to stop reading.
Bergen Performing Arts Center May 11th 2007, Brian Wilson and band. Get yer tickets asap if you wanna go. Thats in New Jersey......east coast.
saw the Long Beach show sat night. they did two gems from "Holland", Sail on Sailor and California Saga both w/ Al on lead vocals, really nice
Best band these ears have heard. People laugh when you tell them that, but i'll be damned if it's not true. This band is TIGHT! I envey you.
...to be able to do a seamless presentation of those complex instrumentals and harmonies which were originally done in the studio.
Yes, I agree. Brian and I had this discussion a while back and he openly admitted this band was better, musically, than his original band, The Beach Boys. I compltely agree'd with him. The vocal mix is amazing also, but you can never re-create the original magical Beach Boy vocal blend. Hope you realised you were hearing music history in the making. Brian insists he's going to "retire" Pet Sounds after this tour. We'll see.......
...on drums for a couple of songs.I knew him from Bonny Raitt's band but hadn't realized he has had such a long history with the Beach Boys. And with Blondie Chapin.
Blondie was sitting in with the Rolling Stones when I saw them in SF a couple years ago.
Guess just about everybody good is connected in some way or other.
were both playing with them in Europe when I saw them in Amsterdam in 1972. Bruce Johnson had just left and they came from the South African band Flame.
Both of them have a ton of album credits.
a great name and they have their own albums out their.
Yes, and percussionist Nelson Bragg just released a solo album on my buddy Jerry Boy'ds Side B label tittled "Day into Night" Nice stuff.
in i think 1979 at the Boston Garden.Though i bought the Tickets and arrangements had been made for me,my two friends and their dates to all meet and drive in together.I was abandoned and had to have my mother drive me in.
There is another opportunity I missed out on.
...my 16 year old daughter got sick and my wife decided to stay home with her so I had 2 extra tickets.I found a friend to go last minute and sold the other one on the street for a big discount.
.
... Duilawyer, during the encores! He was introduced by Brian a few songs into the regular set, BTW. Al played a white Fender strat throughout. This guitar geek found it interestin' that one of the guitarists played a Fender Jazzmaster, rather than a Jaguar. Hey mkuller, wonder if Brian was reading his lyrics off that computer screen on his Yamaha keyboard? Having seen Donald Fagen's solo tour inside Oaktown's Paramount last March, was kind of saddened not to hear Brian unleash some ivory flurishes. With the exception of "In My Room", of course. James Brown played his last Bay Area show inside Paramount's hallowed walls; so shouldn't it be fitting Brian performed his last Pet Sounds tour stop inside that same venue? Oddly, there isn't a review in today's S.F. Chron, @ least not on sfgate anyway.
