who would you invite to play on it...living or dead?
Nina Simone...maybe "Wild Is the Wind"
JS Bach would be nice
Jarrett would be welcome and so would Gould.

...and sock away half the cash, buy a perfectly decent Steinway Model D with the rest, and *then* invite Marilyn Crispell or Ursula Oppens over to play on it.Or maybe Herbie Hancock or Chick Corea...but I'd have to hold a gun to their heads and force them not to play any lame shit: "Play like it's 1976 or I pull the trigger!"
Oh, wait, living or dead? Charles Ives, definitely. There's a recording of him playing & singing a rambunctious version of "They Are There" at some soirée that is perhaps the most mind-bogglingly *charming* sound ever associated with 20th Century western art music.
As in the greats Aretha Franklin, Fats Waller, Ray Charles, Teddy Wilson, Dave Brubeck. Different syles - different genres - all fabulous. And for comic relief a couple comedy masters who could really play: Chico Marx (really) and the immortal Victor Borge. And add a little Jimmy Durante on the side.

Bach, Gould, heck even Chick Corea! While we're at it, I'd also invite Keith Emerson just for some kicks...
David! You can KILL a man with a chopstick!!!
And if I could afford the world's finest piano, I'd probably be able to build him a guest room!
Probably doesn't want this garish piano anyway. He ain't no Liberace!
> He ain't no Liberace! <There's only one of them, thank goodness! :)
Ever listen to the CIMP discs from Cadence? I'm really getting impressed with Steven Gauci's playing. Young lion... or at least unknown to me previously.
I don't know those recordings or Gauci's playing. Where do I find samples?
www.cadencebuilding.com. I'm pretty sure they have some sound bytes. I have a few of their sampler CD's, although nothing with Gauci on it. My personal favorite "newcomer" is saxophonist Elliot Levin who has a few CIMP discs with his quartet featuring Tyrone Hill, trombonist with the late Sun Ra. In fact, if I were to make a list of my 100 favorite "free jazz" discs, at least 4 or 5 would be from this label. The duet disc of David Murray with Kahil El Zabar is killer and even ol' Evan Parker recorded one.Email me at dmkerr2000@yahoo.com and give me your address. I'll send you a couple of samplers gratis.
Actually I'd prefer a vintage B-3/Leslie with Jimmy Smith or Steve Winwood over for the evening.
