I wouldn't be so quick to bash Capitol, when the Dandy Warhols toured the country and refused to play "the last junkie". Not exactly a smart move on their part. They would have likely faded into regional cult status had Vodafone not used a few seconds of "Bohemian Like You" in their commercials, which rocketed the album to number one in 12 European countries in 2001. The Dandys were always fun to see live--5 or 6 times, as I recall--but their recordings are inconsistent, and in my opinion, every album has at least a few weak/ho-hum songs...not unlike Luna, after "California".Brian Jonestown Massacre in the late 90s was as powerful as any band I've ever seen. They reminded me of American Music Club in the early days, who fortunately were strong enough to pull it together for a stellar recording & tour after a long hiatus. Unfortunately, Anton of BJM seems insistent on sabotaging his own career path. Still, even their latest CD is pretty damn good.

...not unlike Luna after the album "Bewitched".
i'm a huge beach boys fan and always thought they were very quick to crap on brian wilson the moment he wasn't making them huge cash.as far as the dandy's, i'm not saying their music is very introspective or complicated, but they are an awesome party/jam band! every album from any band has a few throw aways. not a big deal.
yes, courtney and anton are very similar in their huge ego's. so, both are partly to blame for not living up to their potential.
but i still think the dandys put out some bad-ass pop tunes in the 90's and up to 13 tales in 2000. totally capable catchy tunes that should have made them huge in the states. not to mention you have a band full of good looking, funny people. courtney is easy on the eyes for the girls and his humor is kinda like rufus wainwright. very dry and smart-assy. and zia...oh she is soooo hot! she looks like Pink (especially in the early days) and she used to play topless. sounds like a good plan to me ;-)
And I'm totally in agreement. The Dandys are a supreme party band. From the opening note when they play live, they create a unique feel-good vibe in the room...ESPECIALLY when Zia played topless! She's one of the cutest to have ever graced a stage, for sure.I always thought Courtney was the perfect front man. Handsome, charismatic, even mesmerizing. However, when I read that they played an entire tour and refused to play their hit single, I thought it careless. Good for them that they made it, though. A lot of people around the world like them.
Now, how about another amazing Portland artist who has never made it big: Eric Matthews. A songwriting master a la Burt Bacharach.
