I just watched this last night. I was unfamiliar with the music of both bands, thought I might like BJM's toons better, but it seems like they've never gotten it down on wax. Thought I might find the Dandy Warhols too commercial or, I don't know, Teenage Fanclub-ish for some reason, but that's not the case. Not sure it's something I'd ever spend money on, but that's not a harsh criticism. The stuff sounded good.BJM sounded like something I might've been inclined to spend money on, if it had ever been fully realized. But so far as tolerance for dickheads who treat people like shit & think their mental & emotional issues can be excused away because they're geniuses? I don't have much patience for that, but I'll gladly listen to the music created by such folks & enjoy it. There are names that come to mind who I won't cheapen by bringing them into this discussion, but there's a long laundry list of usual suspects...who have a body of work to show for how miserable they may have been as human beings. This guy? I want to like his music, but I'll make a comparison to, say, Pete Doherty. If the BJM ever made a rec as good as the 2nd Libertines rec, then I'd spend some time thinking about them. Not having heard their recs, I can't say they haven't done that, but it seems unlikely at best. If I'm wrong about that, someone point to a rec, if you would, thanks. I'll be happy to hear their music, but I can't say I'm going to actively seek it out.
Then there's the fighting on stage thing. Surely this guy knows all about Iggy & hopefully even the Mummies. It's possible that showing every BJM gig ending up in nasty violence was taking things out of context, but it was tense & uncomfortable & I thought it was quite disturbing, without any entertainment value to redeem it. And that's coming from someone who thought the chaos that preceded Fear's first note in Decline Of Western Civilization was hilarious.
Although the music is more up my alley in DiG!, I kinda preferred 24 Hour Party People as a document of a scene, though DiG! wasn't exactly that & was completely reality-based. Just a better watch. DiG! is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary rock music, a realistic look at the business, how it's viewed, and how it can actually be distorted to some extent by artists who take themselves way too seriously. I mean, the Dandy Warhols were/are a very decent alt/pop/rock act, but expecting Capitol Records to spend money on promo after the fallout from that expensive video shoot? Weak. Nevertheless, Anton choosing to ridicule the Dandies for no rational reason is just pathetic. If he wanted to stick to some 'I don't sell out' credo, he should've consulted with Mike Watt or Ian MacKaye, both of whom would, I'd wager, have told him to shut up & cooperate with TVT & make the record he was capable of making, even if it meant putting his ego on hold & not treating the people around him like garbage.
Follow Ups:
that would be a site! TVT became a pretty big urban label with lil' jon and the east side boyz as one of their acts.that would be CRUNK-ILICIOUS!! ;-)
even funnier...anton would actually be a perfect fit for the east side boyz...
