DIG! great movie, although it definitely paints Anton newcombe and BJM in a destructive and jealous light.my wife and i have always been big dandy worhols fans. saw them at the Filmore a few years ago. fricken 3+ hour concert! awesome. they said they have the building until midnight, so they are going to get their money's worth ;-)
when they ran out of shit to play, they did a "dandy-fied" version of AC/DC's Hell's Bells, then Zia sang "Mercedes Benz" as an homage to Janis Joplin at the Filmore.
as far as BJM, they are good, but i always thought the Anton's music was some sort of combination of Spacemen3 and Elliot smith, but doesn't necessarily hit the mark. he does have a lot of talent, but i don't think he's as good as HE thinks he is. and the sometimes fake british accent annoys me. he's from OREGON!
and to think the former band members are still SO JEALOUS of the dandy worhols success is sad. first off, their music is NOT the same. second, what's there to be jealous about? the dandy's have had lots of success in Europe, but they were NEVER the band they were supposed to be. capitol records totally fucked up their potential.
the dandy's first three albums were absolute pop masterpieces IMHO. they should have been one of he biggest bands of the 1990's. not in the same league as nirvana, but they're not supposed to be. just a fun kick-ass band.
capitol did jack-shit with their first 3 albums. by the time welcome to the monkey house came along, they had gone past their creative peak IMHO. and their subsequent album "odditorium..." at least shows to me that they are creatively tapped out. which is SO SAD. their record company totally squandered the absolute gems the dandy's were putting out in the 1990's.
now there time has past???
capitol should get their heads out of their collective asses and release a best of retrospective. cut a new video for "the last junkie on earth" or "everyday should be a holiday" and get them some airplay! no one will know they are 10 year old songs, because no one knows who the dandy's are in the first place!
Follow Ups:
I saw this a while back. Couple years maybe? Anyway, I agree that BJM seemed very self destructive. I didn't know anything about them till I saw the documentary but thought they were really good. I remember thinking, "Jesus Christ guys, grow the fuck up"! Kind of a shame. Lot of talent there. Oh, I also like the Dandy Warhols.
I wouldn't be so quick to bash Capitol, when the Dandy Warhols toured the country and refused to play "the last junkie". Not exactly a smart move on their part. They would have likely faded into regional cult status had Vodafone not used a few seconds of "Bohemian Like You" in their commercials, which rocketed the album to number one in 12 European countries in 2001. The Dandys were always fun to see live--5 or 6 times, as I recall--but their recordings are inconsistent, and in my opinion, every album has at least a few weak/ho-hum songs...not unlike Luna, after "California".Brian Jonestown Massacre in the late 90s was as powerful as any band I've ever seen. They reminded me of American Music Club in the early days, who fortunately were strong enough to pull it together for a stellar recording & tour after a long hiatus. Unfortunately, Anton of BJM seems insistent on sabotaging his own career path. Still, even their latest CD is pretty damn good.
...not unlike Luna after the album "Bewitched".
i'm a huge beach boys fan and always thought they were very quick to crap on brian wilson the moment he wasn't making them huge cash.as far as the dandy's, i'm not saying their music is very introspective or complicated, but they are an awesome party/jam band! every album from any band has a few throw aways. not a big deal.
yes, courtney and anton are very similar in their huge ego's. so, both are partly to blame for not living up to their potential.
but i still think the dandys put out some bad-ass pop tunes in the 90's and up to 13 tales in 2000. totally capable catchy tunes that should have made them huge in the states. not to mention you have a band full of good looking, funny people. courtney is easy on the eyes for the girls and his humor is kinda like rufus wainwright. very dry and smart-assy. and zia...oh she is soooo hot! she looks like Pink (especially in the early days) and she used to play topless. sounds like a good plan to me ;-)
And I'm totally in agreement. The Dandys are a supreme party band. From the opening note when they play live, they create a unique feel-good vibe in the room...ESPECIALLY when Zia played topless! She's one of the cutest to have ever graced a stage, for sure.I always thought Courtney was the perfect front man. Handsome, charismatic, even mesmerizing. However, when I read that they played an entire tour and refused to play their hit single, I thought it careless. Good for them that they made it, though. A lot of people around the world like them.
Now, how about another amazing Portland artist who has never made it big: Eric Matthews. A songwriting master a la Burt Bacharach.
I just watched this last night. I was unfamiliar with the music of both bands, thought I might like BJM's toons better, but it seems like they've never gotten it down on wax. Thought I might find the Dandy Warhols too commercial or, I don't know, Teenage Fanclub-ish for some reason, but that's not the case. Not sure it's something I'd ever spend money on, but that's not a harsh criticism. The stuff sounded good.BJM sounded like something I might've been inclined to spend money on, if it had ever been fully realized. But so far as tolerance for dickheads who treat people like shit & think their mental & emotional issues can be excused away because they're geniuses? I don't have much patience for that, but I'll gladly listen to the music created by such folks & enjoy it. There are names that come to mind who I won't cheapen by bringing them into this discussion, but there's a long laundry list of usual suspects...who have a body of work to show for how miserable they may have been as human beings. This guy? I want to like his music, but I'll make a comparison to, say, Pete Doherty. If the BJM ever made a rec as good as the 2nd Libertines rec, then I'd spend some time thinking about them. Not having heard their recs, I can't say they haven't done that, but it seems unlikely at best. If I'm wrong about that, someone point to a rec, if you would, thanks. I'll be happy to hear their music, but I can't say I'm going to actively seek it out.
Then there's the fighting on stage thing. Surely this guy knows all about Iggy & hopefully even the Mummies. It's possible that showing every BJM gig ending up in nasty violence was taking things out of context, but it was tense & uncomfortable & I thought it was quite disturbing, without any entertainment value to redeem it. And that's coming from someone who thought the chaos that preceded Fear's first note in Decline Of Western Civilization was hilarious.
Although the music is more up my alley in DiG!, I kinda preferred 24 Hour Party People as a document of a scene, though DiG! wasn't exactly that & was completely reality-based. Just a better watch. DiG! is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary rock music, a realistic look at the business, how it's viewed, and how it can actually be distorted to some extent by artists who take themselves way too seriously. I mean, the Dandy Warhols were/are a very decent alt/pop/rock act, but expecting Capitol Records to spend money on promo after the fallout from that expensive video shoot? Weak. Nevertheless, Anton choosing to ridicule the Dandies for no rational reason is just pathetic. If he wanted to stick to some 'I don't sell out' credo, he should've consulted with Mike Watt or Ian MacKaye, both of whom would, I'd wager, have told him to shut up & cooperate with TVT & make the record he was capable of making, even if it meant putting his ego on hold & not treating the people around him like garbage.
that would be a site! TVT became a pretty big urban label with lil' jon and the east side boyz as one of their acts.that would be CRUNK-ILICIOUS!! ;-)
even funnier...anton would actually be a perfect fit for the east side boyz...
yo, check dis', don't get up in my grill or i'll sick this mad crazy white boy on your ass ;-)
