She is a support in the film Dreamgirls, the fictionalised version of The supremes and she plays the MAry Wilson/ejected character.
I repeat the film is highly fictionalised.
But its good. Beyonce stars but is completely eclipsed by Hudson.
She sounds like Mavis Staples. Prime Mavis Staples.
And in the middle of the film as she is sacked is her stand alone number. I think its called I'm Not Going.
The rest of the cast are great. Hudson is a brand new star.
On this one song she just lets it flow out of her. Its mesmerising.
I can think of nothing this side of Tim Buckley screaming on Greetings From LA that comes close.
Its spectacular.
Its wonderful.
And she was on American Idol. And before that she was singing on cruises.
Its wonderful.
I am gushing. But you should hear her.
Follow Ups:
has talent. Her voice has pain and joy and everything in between. She also came up through the churches. I hope she is not ruined by some suits in the major label marketing department. It is hard not to gush at such an auspicious debut.
i saw her on the Today show in december and was impressed. she had a smile from ear to ear after she finished her song.
... about an hour or so in, when she is sacked from the band, she sings "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" and its a straight emotional blow out. Its fantastic. Now maybe it hit me in some sort of accepting moment or something but I was absolutely stunned by her performance.
but I am soooooo fed up with that style of singing. It all sounds like the other one, who sounds like another one, who sounds like the last one, who is imitating the next one, who wil..........
But she can open her mouth and let it out.
The song in the middle of the film will stop stop your breathing.
Florence Ballard left the Supremes, dave c, ostensibly to start a family, rather than Mary Wilson. Cindy Birdsong replaced Flo, & several years later Jean Terrell replaced La Diana. This talented trio continued to have hits with "Up the Ladder to the Roof", "Stoned Love", "Nathan Jones", & "Floy Joy"!!!
Check out the new FT-2000 dude? ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!
Thanks for the heads-up, but will stick with that tried-n-true Frog 7, non-fine-tune model, which iz as O.G. as can be! Aint broadcastin'; just listenin' when propogation-n-local rfi permit!!!
Are there any good 'free form' type music and/or talk shortwave radio stations? All I hear on the SW bands are mostly religious BS programs! I'm sick of these religious fanatics having usurped the SW bands!
Being a Pacific Rim listener, Y-14, it's catch-as-catch-can on Radios Australia or New Zealand. Radio Netherlands has done away with their pop-oriented programming for more current affairs fare. Auntie Beeb don't sw broadcast to Latin America, much less North(well, in extremely small snipits), so the only way to catch her musical offerings is by internet, damnit. You might be able to catch Radio France International cuttin' a proverbial rug on occasion during her 1600 G.M.T. Africa broadcasts(music dominates R.F.I. transmissions during staff strikes). Mayhap you'll luck out & catch a u.s.b. pirate around 6.950mhz or so! Radio For Peace International was kicked outta its' Costa Rica digs half-a-decade ago or so, & was supposed to have regrouped to, & started broadcasting from, Oregon. Haven't heard Radio Havana Cuba in a while, but they used to play dynamyte salsa. Radio Moscow used to have interestin' jazz programming. Radio Sweden had its' hipster-scene Club 10-5-10. Nowadaze though, Y-14, it's Slim Pickens on that international ether!!!
Even as I thought it I knew I had something wrong.
That's the showstopper you're mentioning sung by Hudson. It was the climas of the stage show too - which I saw back in the day (directed by Michael Bennett)A major talent she is, although her acting chops don't near match her musical chops - yet.
I have a few probalems with the movie myself, which surprised me cuz I normally love Bill Condon's work (Gods & Monsters, Kinsey, screenplay for Chicago). It's very enjoyable however, and Eddie Murphy gets his best role in years and makes the most of it. Beyonce doesn't have much to do - gorgeous woman but a bit of a blank as an actor.
Jennifer Hudson was voted off American Idol for much the same reason as Effie gets demoted from lead in the Dreams.
I thought Beyonce was supposed to have a large0ish bottom but appears sylphlike in the movie.
Hudson out-sings her all the way. Beyonce's character is actually described as having no character in her voice.
Curious considering how big a star she is that she let herslf be cast like that.
But Hudson is absolutely riveting.
How long did she last on the show before they booted her?
just the other night and is likely to win the Oscar for her role.
