We did light up with a bit of single malt about 7 hours into the session. Just a wee dram or two. But I was certainly intoxicated with the sound. And I don't read reviews of audio gear. That's weird, I know - but how someone else subjectively reacts to a component isn't terribly interesting to me. Music reviews, on the other hand, tell me a great deal about the music.

I find it interesting that I never once considered that we should change wires or amps. What's even more interesting is that the owner didn't. He used generic wire on purpose as he wanted to get to know the speakers on their own without adding anything. He's going to hook up his Nordost SPM at some point and will likely try his tubed Acoustic Research amps (or some such) as well. It was just hard to imagine during the listening session that there were any real shortcomings to address.

It's too bad the idea that generic wire is just as good as the most expensive wires available ... never occurs in your closed mind ... even after nine hours of enjoyable listening through generic wires.Oh I forgot, with "better" wires the Orions would have sounded sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better!
However you still have my vote for Assistant Dogcatcher.

Perhaps "somewhat" better. If better wire didn't make them sound at least a touch better, the Orions are indeed in a league of their own. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Any subjective experimentation with different wires is doomed as you already expect certain results = your mind will try to justify pre-existing beliefs.
Plus the thicker speaker cables will be louder.
Even YOU might hear that.
So easy to do a single blind wire swap comparison.
Yet so rare among Golden Ears that you'd think and SBT was equivalent to the effort required to climb Mt. Everest!

It's a question of experience, not belief.I've already done a single blind swap comparision of wires. The question is not IF wires sound different, it's WHY.
These things have already fallen into GE subjectivist hands.
The "staggering improvements" that can be wrought upon the system through the used of proper blessed speaker wire, made from silver and copper ored from the sacred mines of Antioch, painstakingly assembled by virgin hand maidens, are just around the corner, have they not happened already.
The flimsy power cords must be stricken and replaced with more manly versions, that relegate graininess to the after-world (needless to say, plugged into a cryo treated outlet from your personal battery/generator system in the lead vault).
The cold, sterile and mechanical sound of op amps and transistors must be abolished immediately, in their place, wonderful warm and fuzzy vacuum tubes....well you know the routine if you frequent the wacko boards. Either that or you could just use black tape or spray paint to cover the RS Gold text.Cheers,
AJ
p.s. in all seriousness, since the esteemed physicist Geoff Kait gave us Intelligent Chips already, can an Intelligent Dip be far behind? Maybe ranch flavored? That can be applied directly to any physical object (for stupendous sound improvement) such as the Orions and associated equipment? If this has not been thought of already, perhaps I could get a kickback for mentioning this scheme?
