As a speaker builder who used passive crossovers I know there are tolerances among crossover components that can make two samples of the same brand/model resistor sound different.Did you measure the components before deciding they sounded different?
One part could be 5% or more over the nominal specification, and the other 5% or more under the nominal specification, even if they were the same brand/model part. That doesn't mean that two caps, of any brand, whose measurements were much more closely matched, would sound different.

Richard, I judged the parts in amps, not speakers. I always measure values and try to match. Besides parts are sometimes labeled incorrectly or factory defective!I do not claim my data is relevant or applicable to others. I simply get together with my friends and we change a part and see what we think. In some cases the differences are so easily heard that all it takes is a second or two. In other cases one must leave a part in place for a month and then change back to the old one. We might not all agree all the time but generally we do and trends do emerge enough to make an educated guess.
For example a carbon comp resistor will sound warmer than and not as clear as a good metal film. A Teflon cap will sound clearer and more detailed than polyester. I am sure most speaker guys would agree that most film caps will beat most electrolytic caps even if they are matched values.
So no witchcraft involved and I refuse to waste money on boutique brands.

I have heard differences between 1% polystyrene (film on foil) and 1% teflon (film on foil) made by the same manufacturer. Your standards of comparison are too low.
but...... would you have heard a difference if you didn't know the components were changed !.. don't bother answering, there is no answer you can sensibly give.. we must just accept it on faith. !
Geoff, I make my living designing and building audio equipment. I don't need a blind test to tell me what differences are. In fact, the differences that I hear are only evaluated over a period of time listening to the equipment with different parts used. A quick A-B would not bring out much. However, I welcome the idea that I have been overzealous. If I could really prove to myself that I could use just about any good 1% resistor, then I have thousands of resistors, previously unused, available to me and I don't have to source my favorites in future. Perhaps some of you, out there, would like to purchase some of the caps and resistors of my large collection that I don't prefer to use with my audio designs. Great prices are possible! ;-)
But given that it is an audio forum I don't know how anyone can possibly state all (insert part name) sound the same. Now there isn't a Huge difference between besychlag/resista/holco/dale RN so I can understand someone saying they all sound the same to me. But if you can't hear the difference between a teflon and a polyester coupling cap consider yourself lucky and go buy a transistor radio at kmart and be happy.

Look, you are just acting out in an ignorant way. First of all, they are not 'rocks' in those bottles. IF you actually had seen one, you would know this.
My designs do not require tweaks of that nature, but I do not see where they could hurt, and perhaps could even help the audio listening experience. I might feel the same way about a gas additive, when it comes to improving driving performance.
...when set up skillfully. I'm talking about HUGE gains here, not piddly refinement. If people only knew; and it really is a shame that they don't.
