thanks for your reply....I guess I should include a budget. I should have stated the price range that is near the plx price range.....I know there are some rediculous amps out there in 'hi-end', so I wanted to focus on 'hifi'
how does the plx (or similar amps like Crown CE) compare to Adcom, Acurus, Bryston, Carver, NAD , Rotel etc..... that is the budget range I was talking about....
pwr ratings aside (since the pro amps do have more power), just the resulting sound is what I am after. If the pro amp has severe headroom , oh well....that in itself can make the amp sound better than it's competitor.....regardless of goldplated posts, anodized aluminum faceplate, etc...
Thanks

I used to swear my Crown CE-1000 would blow away those other amps you mentioned. I probably still would. However, I have to admit the best sounding amplifier to date (in my opinion) is a BGW Millennium series amplifier. I have a BGW Millennium 3. It offers so much in every category. The biggest Millennium, the MIL-3, retails for $1296, and can be purchased new for $785. To the poster who thinks $10,000L to $20,000L is a resonable price to pay for a power amp of any given number of channels -- wake up and realize most of us do not make multi-millions of dollars per year. The Crown Studio Reference amps or the BGW Professional amps are still probably even better.
Dear Kevin,You missed my point. I wasn't suggesting that you go out and spend that kind of money on an amp, I was just saying that you can spend that kind of money on an amp. And as to your suggestion about what might beat the FM accoustics amps, nothing much out there I doubt. With specs such as a damping factor of 800-1 as against the best of the rest at around 400-1, distortion ratings of 0.01% at 400 watts output, not the nominal 1 watt that many manufacturers use. I've heard these amps, because I've owned them, and they are amazing, but not really practical to own.

Roland,
Those FM Acoustics amps sure do sound nice. I do not doubt for a second that they are of top quality. No matter how long I have been comparing power amplifiers, there will still be brands/models that I have not yet encountered. I might one day be fortunate enough to own an FM Acoustics product (keeping fingers crossed.) Although I too understand that specs aren't everything. Yet, Crown's Studio Reference series boasts a damping factor of 20,000, THD+noise < 0.02%, distortion measured at full power output, a power bandwidth of something like DC - something greater than 85 kHz... can't remember all the specs. Yet, most lower end pro amps have damping factors of 1,000, similar THD specs, ruler flat freq. response curves, etc. but they don't all sound quite as sweet as the next. I've listened to just about every Crown out there, minus the Studio Reference series, so I would love it if somebody could tell me how musical they are or are not.Kevin
Yes, it can give it more potential headroom, but at a cost. A hifi amp, because it doesn't need to generate the same amount of power, needs less output devices, doesn't need to drive those output devices as much, and needs less powersupply, all things that add to cost. Cooling also becomes more of an issue the more power you try to develope. I would expect you to get more for your money from a well made well designed hifi amp, but I would try to steer away from the trendy makes, and go for a good well designed amp from a reputable maker. Brystons are very good amps, I would expect the Amcrons to outperform the QXC's. Go have a listen to some domestic amps first, I suspect that you will find something amongst them that will more than satisfy.Regards
