Can someone suggest a replacement for my Behringer 3 way active crossover ?I find it lacks finesse used in my HI FI setup. Some audiophile friends recomend BSS wich is way to expensive. Anyone tried DBX crossovers ?

IF this is the cx-3400 you are referring too, it is a very good unit IMO. I have compard it to Rod Elliot based designs, and thier is very little difference. Very suprising considering the price and Behringer's rep of mixing boards. I have heard not-so-good things however about Behringer's older, discontinued models. But if you have the 3400 and it is not quite cutting it and you are handy with a soldering iron, simply replace the NRJ4580 op amps with OP2134 or similar. Also, replace the output coupled film caps, with a known high quality film caps of same value(Behringer prints all of the component values on their boards). Also, be sure to add some bypass caps to the powersupply pins of the opamps. The opamps and caps are surface mount, but it is not a congested circuit layout as most SM boards are so this should not be a real problem for you.-Chris
-NJM4580, not NJR.-"I have compard it to Rod Elliot based designs, and thier is very little difference." --- I meant sonically, at least as I percieved it.

The Rane AC-23 xover has been in my low - power (1100w/side) PA system for a few years and am pretty happy w/ it. There are time offset adjustments on the mid & low levels so that that you can electronically align the drivers if they are in seperate cabinets. For instance if the subs are on the floor and the mid/hi cabs are on sticks ( my usual set -up for small clubs & the like ). The mute switches on each channel are helpful in the set-up. My only complaint about this unit is there are no xlr connects, only trs which seem to pull out easily, even in the rack. I have also owned the DBX 234 but had to return it for warranty repair on some internal switches which made noise. I have used systems that had the Beheringer and it seemed a little better constructed (at least from the outside). They sound and operate the same to me. DBX makes a speaker management system like the BSS now, which is supposedly decent and cheaper. But I have yet to see or use one.
I'm really fond of the Ashley Crossovers. Very nice sounding, easy to setup. Decent price. Only problem is I had a cold solder joint on one of the XLR jacks. Ashley repaired it under warrantee, so no major complaints there.Phil
BSS are top of the food chain when it comes to active crossovers. Their best device is the Omnidrive, that does the work in the digital domain. Anything made by DBX (wasn't aware that they made a crossover) should be a resonable improvement over Beringher, albeit at a much higher price point.Regards
