Thanks for answering my question and explaining what is going on. I don't have a sleeve for the machine. There is no knob that can be turned to correct the speed. I will see if the sleeve that "is" on the machine comes off. I did try to find some answers on the AKAI
website, but all I could find was new products and no way to email them. I will try once more. You have helped me understand
what is going on and I am "much appreciative". It was driving me crazy. If I get the puzzle solved I will come back and post here. I think there is another machine at our cottage in Pa, and when we go there this summer, I will try the tapes on it if I can't get "this" machine to work. (I don't know what brand it is, as it was left to my sister and we just have it stored) (these tapes have good music on them and I hate to have them wasted if they disintegrate.) Again, thanks so much. Carol
Follow Ups:
The machine should have a speed knob or switch to switch the record and play equalization as these are different for 3.75 and 7.5 IPS. However, without the capstan "sleeve" you will not be able to change the actual transport speed. Are you positive it isn't already on the capstan? Without it it plays at 3.75 IPS. You should have no tapes that would sound too fast at this speed unless the tapes were recorded on another machine at 1 7/8 IPS.There is one other possibility. The machine may be set for the wrong line frequency for your area.
Success!!! My husband took the "sleeve" off the capstan and the speed changed, just like you said. The tapes so far are working "fine". Right now I am doing a Nat King Cole tape. He has Count Basie, and all the Big Bands. Now I can copy some of them. Thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated. Carol
I'm glad I could be of some help to you.Follow the link (below) for more information on the Akai 4000 tape decks.
