Does anyone have any info on the Panasonic SV-3900 profession digital audio tape recorder? Also, what's the difference between DAT and ADAT?
Follow Ups:
Many studios I've worked in have this machine.I've never particularly liked the way it sounds, particularly its dynamic performance; sounds like there's a limiter in the chain.
I believe its jitter spec is scary, something over 4000 picoseconds.
I believe you're better off with one of the Sony machines, if you're going to go with DAT, but with all digital tape machines I've experienced (all the way up to the 3/4" U-Matics), be aware the shelf life of the recording is rather limited. For example, a DAT (or U-Matic tape) will have increased errors and a good chance of a least one drop-out (short term mute) once its about 6 months old.
Hope this helps.
Happy Listening!

I was not aware of a jitter problem with the Panasonic machine and in the past have locked digital mixers to them without trouble. They do, however, need a little time to lock up when being fed from a digital source (without additional word clock).Regards,

I believe Robert Harley measured the jitter on this machine in a review he wrote a while back. (At least I thing it was RH.)Another way to identify it is in the loose bass, compressed dynamics, absence of depth and generally opaque sound it produces.
Happy Listening (hopefully to a different machine)

Dat machines are 2 track recorders using digital audio tape (DAT) that can provide up to 2 hours of 44.1K / 48.0K recording /playbackAdat machines are manufactured under the Alesis name and are 8 track digital audio recorders using a standard S-VHS cartridge and give 43 to 67 mins of 8 track recording / Playback.
Panasonic DAT machines are very reliable and of standard quality.
Look for a yahoo web search to learn about the DAT machines and their various brands.
www.oade.com has good info so does www.panasonic.com
