I'm looking for a relatively cheap mixer (in the Behringer price range) to merge & mix digital outputs from several hard external sources (not digital tracks in a sequencer).MIDI fader control would be a big plus. It can be 19" rack or, even better, a PC-based card. I need at least eight S/PDIF TOSlink consumer optical and/or coax inputs. 44.1kHz is fine. AES/EBU outputs would be a plus also.
For the record I already know about:
www.nirvis.com DXS switcher (no mixing and now discontinued!)
www.msbtech.com Digital Director switcher (no mixing)and most other so-called automatic switchers: they don't offer mixing capabilities or simply don't work :-(
I also know about www.creamware.com Pulsar/SCOPE boards and similar products. They usually offer only ADAT Lightpipe inputs, etc.
Thanks for your help!

Not as far as I can tell.Regards,

RME Hammerfall DSP. Very highly regarded.check out the Digiface and Multiface
digiface = 3 Toslink I/O and a S/Pdif
Multiface = 1 Toslink / S/Pdif and 8 24 bit analog
Both come with a really great software mixer called TotalMix
SCOPE/DP (15 SHARC DSPs) and a Pulsar (6 SHARC DSPs) that I could use but it is a bit of an overkill for this app :-)Thanks again!

Yes, with an Option card.8 I/O via Toslink Adat format.
s/Pdif is built in.
should be able to pick one up used w/option card for <1K$.Great board.

Thanks for the info. I've read good stuff about this board.I didn't know that ADAT had consumer S/PDIF built into it. Are there breakout boxes to go from 8 TOSlink optical 44.1kHz lines to an ADAT interface?
Thanks for your help.

No, I may have mis-understood you or you, me.ADAT option card for 01V is ADAT format. 8 channels in and 8 out.
for instance. Connect a PD with an ADAT option in th eaudio card. Or connect and ADAT tape deck or a Fostex HD recorder, etc. etc.
Now lets say you have S/Pdif on coax. That can run stright to the V via the two RCA jacks on the mixer.
If you have S/PDIF on Toslink you would need to buy or build a converter ( maybe ). do a search for CO2 from Midiman I think.
If you look at the next message I sent about RME. their box can run S/PDIF out of 1 of the ADAT lightpipes as can a few other PC sound cards.
You asked for midi control so I assumed you wre getting a PC card involved in this as well.
You are hard pressed to beat the Hammerfall / 01v setup for the money. You don't need their top line DSP interfaces if you get the mixer too. A 96/8 will do. Their cards are getting much cheaper since the release of the DSP line.
You can also get an AES/EBU option card for the V but you can only use one option card at a time. You would have to physically switch them.
Hope this sheds some light.

"I may have mis-understood you or you, me."
I think there's a little of both maybe :-)My application is the following: I have 8 digital stereo sources with only S/PDIF TOSlink 44.1kHz optical output (1 fiber for each source). I need to merge and mix (fade-in/out) these in real-time (that's where MIDI control would be nice) and output digitally the mixed signal (stereo). AES/EBU output would be ideal but anything else (S/PDIF optical or coax) would do because I could always convert to AES/EBU using a Midiman CO3 converter.
I will re-read the RME info again. Thanks for your time.

Oh!... No I really mis-understood. I see now what you are trying to do. That's a tough one. I am not aware of anything that would handle it.S
I have a friend who has that exact same console! He's going to try to register for the forum. Either that or you can e-mail me and I will pass along your e-mail address to him.
