We're outfitting an existing gymnasium with acoustical treatments and audio/video/lighting to turn it into a worship center. We have a blank canvas but a severe cap on how much we can spend since we're still in debt for the building. The consultants are asking questions we're not yet prepared to answer, and I don't know if anyone even knows the answers to. Our main concern is to get acoustical treatments done, but before they will refer us to their acoustician they want us to decide basically everything. So now I'm attempting the design on my own, strictly from an equipment standpoint, not speaker placement or selection. That I will leave to the audio engineer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed.
Follow Ups:
From what you've said, they are either morons or asses, but they're NOT consultants. Dump them, and go find a real consultant. (I listed several in an earlier post.)Time to review:
You want acoustical treatment first. That makes some sense.
They won't refer you to "their" acoustician. That's bullsh*t. What are their acoustician's credentials? You ought to be talking with him immediately.
Lastly, you can't design a system until: 1. You know what it has to do; and 2. The acoustical environment it must work in.
As I've said for years: "There's a 'consultant' under every rock."
Heck, I'll do it. Take a look at www.youramerica.net. Where are you located?
I myself lack the power to dump them; someone else entered into a contract with them without telling me. We'll be paying them extra money to contract with an acoustician that I could have contacted directly. But, leaving that behind since there is absolutely nothing I can do about it, I can smile and nod for now and ignore them when the part we've contracted for is done. The acoustician they're using is highly regarded and well established in the area and even the state.
My objective in this project is to put together a sound system that can carry us in virtually any direction we want to go: ear-splitting rock concert to strictly spoken word seminar. My next big argument with them will be over speaker arrangement. They're going to push for a stereo LR speaker configuration, even if the system is run mono. Another installer I know who have been working in audio for a long time favors center clusters. Others I've talked to favor three channel LCR configurations. I think LCR is overkill; too much money for not enough benefit to the average listener. Now I have to decide if we should go with the LR or the center cluster. Thoughts?
Have the person in charge contact me.
