I have changed the skins and fixed that first issue. There's a couple of skins to select to download from their site, I say try a couple and see which ones work for you. When opening the files hit "Ctrl-A" when you are in the folder to select all the files in the directory. It lines them up by track file name. If you name your tracks with ##'s there's no issues.
I noticed Foobar was softer in the presentation, but it didn't matter what track I played, there was a LOT more detail. In fact I am enjoying an album now using it. Foobar seems to smooth the sound, while XMPlay seems to playback closer to the RAW sound of the files.
Follow Ups:

But when I select another song or album or playlist, it opens a 2nd window of xm and the 2 play simultaneously.
There's a check box in miscellaneous panel 'allow ultiple instances'
