If you buy an external drive with the drive already in it, the warranty is usually only a year. For the same money, if you buy a harddrive and the external case separately, the warranty on the case is usually still only a year, but the industry standard warranty for internal harddrives is five years.

You only get the 5-year warranty on hard drives ONLY if you buy the HD in a brick and mortar store. If you mail-order the exactly same hard drive from an on-line store, the warranty usually is only for 1 year! Interesting, eh?
I think the Seagates have a 5-year warranty nonetheless. And Venus enclosures have served me well. A bit pricier but worth it.
When I looked at this about a month ago newegg had two versions of seagates, one with the 5 year warranty and one slightly cheaper sold from inventory of overstock and you roll dice about the warranty you get, could be one, five or none...part of me wonders what the hell good a warranty is on a harddrive, anyway...your data is what matters and when they go it's gone.
