As earlier reported, I had great results using the Burwen Bobcat running in Vista. Much better than what I achieved with XP. The last several days I compared Vista/Bobcat with the Apple OSX 10.4.The Mac does present a more accurate playback of the ripped CD compared to Vista/Bobcat. But then again, the Bobcat is not supposed to be a bit perfect reproduction of the CD, but an enhancement like oversampling.
All of us know the CD with 16/44.1 has problems in the high end. Listen to a good DVD-A like the Axis Records’ recordings and you immediately hear the difference. There is something fatiguing and wrong with 16/44.1.
Steve Nugent recommends the SRC for his equipment. Gordon Rankin is working on a passive I/V using a synchronous upsampler for his Crimson USB DAC. The new Memory Player suggests that ripping of the CD into memory in real time playback is the solution.
As good as the Mac sounded, I found myself becoming more emotionally involved while listening to the Bobcat. It was very significant for me. As other inmates have suggested, I need to put the Bobcat through extended listening to determine it’s true worth.
Follow Ups:
Mercman - help!!!! I have a new SONY VAIO laptop with Vista. Have downloaded Bobcat. Bobcat does not make any difference in sound... like I have no application at all. Filters do not work. There is no warnings from Bobcat so I assume - software and registration is OK. Can you help? Grazie!
I had the same problem. It seems that Vista bypasses the Bobcat plugin during playback of MP3 and WMV files, but CD, WAV playback are fine, as is the playback of Bobcat processed MP3s.
I heard back from Dick Burwen that an update for Vista is in the works to address this issue.
Hope this helps.

Steve,Do note that any upsampling is merly filtering. Whereas the memory device is not doing any processing of the samples (I think).
If you want try this... enable the Equalizer in iTunes and fool with it a little. It's pretty much the same idea as using the Computer to do upsampling or filtering. All of it is different not neccesarily better just different.
Maybe what we need for you to do Steve is dump the rest of the system for some SET's and Friendly Speakers ;)
Gordon,Yup, the solid state stuff I have is probably what I'm trying to fix with this program. Your amps would probably send me straight to Nirvana.
I better call my dealer today and cancel those Wilson 8s I ordered!
Are you using the same playback software in Vista vs. OSX? Are you using Bobcat software to play songs in Vista but iTunes in OSX?
The Bobcat requires WMP11 and WMA lossless with Vista. On my Mac, I'm using Apple lossless and iTunes.
