In Reply to: Why no "reasonably" priced USB Dacs? posted by freaknhell on March 28, 2007 at 10:33:42:
There are several DACs that have a USB input:Benchmark DAC1 USB
Apogee USB DAC
MHDT Paradisea+
AQVOX USB DAC
EMU 0404 USB card
Hagerman Chime USB DAC
Trends Audio USB DAC UD-10
Perreaux SXD2 USB DAC
Wavelength BrickThe question is - Does any of these USB DACs take the signal straight to I2S (as Empirical Audio advocates) without converting first to SPDIF and then take the signal from SPDIF. If you go through SPDIF, you might as well just use one of the external USB-SPDIF converters such as the HagUSB or others and use any standard DAC with SPDIF input.
Any comments on the above list of DACs?

The Nixon goes from USB to I2S directly, no s/pdif in the box
Good recommendation - I was just lookig for a DAC for a friend who would like a well implemented USB DAC for under $500.

Benchmark and Wavelength go direct to I2S. Dont know about the others.
Steve, thanks very much for the reply. Of course, your DACs/converters use I2S just as well as Wavelength use I2S (I use Gordon's Bricks at home). Without your website I wouldn't have started reading about I2S ;-)Aside from you and Gordon who are very straightforward about your ideas and implementations, it is difficult to find out, how the DA conversion is implemented by a particular manufacturer. Take the whole Lavry - upsampling controversy for example. I am still not sure whether the Lavry does upsample every incoming signal or not...

try emailing him before blowing off his product.. it's a great product, direct i2s and a good value. He's upgrading mine now, and I'm upgrading to the 4xac PS from the stock.. i'm excited to hear some improvements to an already nice DAC.i know i sound like a shill, but seriously, i just love the thing.
