I have a question, might be obvious for some but its making me scratch my head....
I have been listening to the Beatles 'Love' album on standard CD on my PC. I was wondering if I could get any greater resolution from the other layers on the DVD-A disc.
I only listen in stereo on the 'puter on my headphones but was trying to work out if I could extract anything else over and above the stock PCM recorded version.
Is there a Codec for playing DVD-A on a computer (a long shot), or are the other Dolby layers going to be of a lesser or lossy format worse than that of a CD.
I really will have to get myself up to speed on formats other than just CD and Vinyl...Cheers,
KP.S.
At the moment I play ripped CD's from a hard drive in Wavelab (or iTunes if I'm a bit lazy) and send to a firewire M-Audio 410. It then sends spdif to an MF X-dac V3 and X-cans V3. I am sure this could be done better as well.
Follow Ups:
DVD-A cannot be ripped the same way a CD can. (Copy protected) And I don't think you can even play it with a computer DVD-ROM drive. There are workarounds - such as simply recording the analog out (from your standalone DVD-A player), but whether this is worth it is up to you.
It's definitely not as seamless as ripping a CD, but the DVD-Audio copy protection was bypassed a while ago.Do a search.
I was not sure as to what part would/could create a problem, the actual reading of the disc, if it were possible, or the decoding. Now that I know it is feasible, I can start to fiddle about. My knowledge of PC in general is limited but I'm slowly learning, just have to approach each problem/idea individually and see what happens.I must say that I read alot of your postings and replies to people, many have been very informative and helpful. I have to admit that your conversation with Charles Hansen over on digital about Jitter, well, it lost me very quickly indeed. I would love to understand much more about these things but maybe I'm just not cut out for that level of technical thinking.
I was not sure about the DVD-A layer being playable on anything other than a DVD-A specific player.
I am also under the impression that the other options, DTS and Dolby digital, are of a lower quality than standard CD resolution. I read alot about this encoding stuff and then it instantly leaves my head... so I remain in the dark on such matters.
Hi! Such a program exists. It is called Creative MediaSourse DVD-Audio Player and it comes only in a full retail bundle of Creative Audigy AWE 32 soundcard. On startup it initializes and suggest You to put in a DVD-audio sampler disk.(Also included in the bundle but is full of crap). You can easily play 24-96 with this program. Search better! Good luck,
Serge.
Good stuff.
Now that I know it is physically possible to play/read the disc, I can go about tracking down the right tool for the job. With so many formats and different types of compression and encoding, it can be a little daunting.
I just want to be able to listen to the best quality that I can get from these shiny discs.... or even from a drive.
