Have just built a very quiet PC and now annoyed that the DVD-CD player makes the normal jet engine sound for a while, sometimes calms down, but on classical music it is just too much even in my phones. I assume this is fan noise of some kind. Never understood this power-fan spiking. My DVD-CD Burner is Samsung 16x maybe a few months old, internal. This is just on playing, all I want is a CD-ROM that can play music without the hummmmmmm and whooosh! Will a USB DVD_RW with a seperate power supply fit the bill or is that just as noisy?
Also has anyone ever seen a standalone CD player that can connect to the internet or at least get track info that way? I like getting all my track info, I just would like to have playback it minus the noise.
Pete
Follow Ups:
Just use software such as CDBremse or Nero Speed Control to reduce playback speed to 2x or whatever. There will be no more spinning up and down.
Why would you playback cds from a cdrom drive vs. ripping and playing back from the hard drive? If you are using a lossless format or uncompressed files, you should get a better sound than the cd-rom drive. Plus, hard drives are typically quieter these days than cd-rom drives.
Also, most ripping programs will find the artist and track info automatically when ripping.
Finally, one of the big reasons for PC audio is the shear convenience. Do you really want to putz around with cds when you can just point and click???
Legality aside, asking to rip the CD's your friends bring over to listen to is a bit rude. I haven't used my CD player for my own music in years, but I keep it in the system for just such occasions.
You're kidding me right? Rude? I thinks it would be rude of your friend NOT to offer to let you rip his CD. Legality? Possession is 9/10's.
This is a good point you raise, and I can see why you would do it.I didn't get the sense that that is what the original poster was talking about, but would be a good reason to use the cdrom drive.
Would it be rude to tell friends to bring music on a hard drive if they want to listen??
