All:If you had a DAC you liked that only accepted Coax, AES, or Optical, would you come from your PC with coax off the mobo, Optical using _____ sound card, or USB using some sort of coverter to go to coax. Would one of those be markedly better for a 20 foot run?
Follow Ups:
20 feet is to long for a single USB cable. you will have to use an active hub.If there is a reclocker in the circuit, any of these would work great. Without, the USB will be the best, followed by the AES, S/PDIF and Toslink the worst. This is assuming that the laptop is not grounded.
Another option that you did not mention is USB to I2S. This leaves all the rest in the dust IMO, but must have an I2S DAC.
Hi folks.I am just trying to figure out for myself, if I should go for
the optical Opticis USB product.I think galvanic isolation is a must!!! Doesn't matter if we talk
USB or COAX. The PC noise is a total mess - period.
No question about it.One question remains though: What's worse - The jitter caught by the
optical converters or the noise generated by the PC?Perhaps somebody can answer that question.
In case somebody (Please tell me if you work for Opticis ;) )is telling me, the noise impact is worse than the jitter impact.
I'll order today an Opticis USB extension.
Put it this way - the noise is an absolute - either you are or you are not isolated. The jitter IMHO is more of a gray issue - starting with will you really hear it... I don't.
Perhaps you should talk to Steve (audioengr) about jitter and its
sound effects!
here is another opinion...there are two good ways to do long runs - make it three if you want to included balanced.
#1 - Ethernet - like the Squeezebox - then take the coax (SPDIF) out of it into your DAC
#2 - Opticis USB - which is a fibre optic cable that will run hundreds of feet without dropouts - then get something like a Waveterminal and come out either coax (SPDIF) or Toslink - or check out Sailors recommendation above
If I was planning that kind of setup, I would be thinking about AES, with the Lynx AES16 transformer-coupled outs.
But that's mostly a function of my kick-ass APL universal 3910...It has a coax input. But hey, - there are many boats to float, and I'm just a little guppy in a big fish pond.
I go USB out from my Cat5 networked IBook to USB to COAX to digital input on my APL. WE have a big old MAC G5 ITunes music server in the basement....

I bought the USB to Coax converter and it works great. No software of drivers to load just plug and play. Playing back ripped CD from the hard drive were not different from playing the CD's in my CDP. I am using a 10ft USB extension on the 3 or 4ft USB on the Unit and a 3ft Coax to my DAC. I am also playing back LP's I converted to WAV.
I am just starting moving music to the hard drive to archive and to have available to the rest of the house via WIFI(about three projects from now)
I also have the M-Audio Audiophile USB but having problems with driver and such to get it to work properly, but when i do I will make a comparison both in archiving (ADC)instead of Soundblaster and DAC instead of the ageophile converter.
So it goes.........
The M-Audio Audiophile USB sounds very good with Foobar2000 and SRC 24/96 upsampling, but was a right royal pain to use with the driver supplied in the box - the latest XP driver (5.10.00.5077) is recommended.
It does need some setting up though - if Windows/Foobar is your platform let me know if I can help.David
Driver:

Thanks for the response Yes I have the new driver for my XP PC but I cannot get the new driver to work on my laptop (XP Media Center) and accoring to M-Audio they do not support Media Center so I am going to have to do a fresh install of XP PRO once I make sure I can get all the laptop drivers for XP Pro from HP
So it goes.........
This device is based on a really old chip that is obsolete now. It does not support 24/96 and requires ASIO4ALL to bybass Kmixer. I think if you get the Audiophile USB working and use a good ASIO plug-in with Foobar2K, you will get a much better result. SRC upsampling makes it even better.
Well for my first go at this it was nice to have success with out any work. I now have an Audiophile USB and I got it working on the PC with the new driver and on my laptop with the old driver(see my response to davehanc
I will look into Foobar and ASIO4ALL as I learn more
So it goes.........
The driver with M-Audio will use the Foobar or Otachan ASIO. This is what you want.
FooBar looks complicated. IU have been to thier web site and downloaded the help stuff. Why is Foobar what most people use when thay claim there is no advantage(sound Quaility) to using thier product.
So it goes.........
Foobar is the best sounding player for USB IMO and has a wide variety of different plug-ins.
wifi for long run like airport express, squeezebox, roku...
