I'm outgrowing my Maxtor 500GB hard drives for storing music. I was considering the Maxtor 750GB drive because the Maxtors have been quiet and reliable. I would need two of them, one for storage and one for backing up. I would retire my 500GBs to photo backup duty. But I'm curious to hear what others are using for greater than 500GBs storage? There are fewer products in this realm. What about some of the network drives? 1TB drives?
The room is small so quiet drives are required. It's sort of my meditative space and any electronic sounds are distracting. I also do all of my photo work in this space. I can use USB or FW400 (prefer FW). Also, in the current situation it's not really possible to store the hard drive in another room.
Follow Ups:
I'm using 3 Seagate 750 GB internal HD's in RAID configuration for a total of 2.25 TB (Actually 2.094 TB) for my music storage. I've currently ripped over 3,000 CD's with over 32,000 songs in WAV lossless for ~555 GB of storage used so far. The operating system is a separate 80 GB HD.
Strange how different people view different manufacturers. I wouldnt have a Maxtor disk in any of my systems now, I lost 3 hard drives (Out of a total of 11 in all my pc's) in less than a year and they were all Maxtor's. After a bit of digging I found some Western Digital Caviars that were supposed to be a bit more rugged (RAID editions) and use only those now.
Hi there.I am using a 500GB WD-Netcenter. It's a standalone unit not bigger
than a book and comes with its own OS. It can be placed anywhere in the network.Though the (my) ethernet capacity of 100Mbit can not really be called "data freeway". (Looking forward to affordable 1GB or 10GB lan-solutions in the near furture)
As a storage it is perfect. I don't need an extra PC and can access it easily from all my audio- and other clients in the house without moving an external HD around. It is scalable. I just add another one to the network or can even attach USB-HDD to it to extent its capacity!
It runs under Windows and Linux.
Two 500GB internal drives.Or maybe you're using a laptop for music, so it must be external drives.
But if you have a home network you could easily locate a file server anywhere in your home. If you don't have the wiring, a wireless network should work just as well for audio applications. In a file server it won't matter if you have one drive or ten.
If all that's too much to deal with, just get the 750GB drives.
I'm using small form factor Dell GX model PC, it's super quiet, with a SATA card, running two external 250gb Adcomm external drives. Even the external drives are super quiet. But if you're going to do all this, I would recommend UPS. With the PC in control, allows me to put better security in front of the drives and more control, or I could do a RAID setup. I also didn’t want to take the chance of loosing everything especially family photos if the drive died on 1 big hard drive.
:)
I currently use Maxtor as well. They have been good. I say stick with them. As far as NAS goes, I built my own with an old PC. This might not be your best choice since you need quiet in the room.If you want to get "crazy" you could always go with Sun Microsystems StorageTek 5320 NAS appliance. Currently they go up to 224 Terabytes. They start at around $42K, I gather that's more than some people spend on their audio systems however :)
