Another issue I had with the Audigy was the spooky spdif output at nealy 8V peak to peak, with the most distorted square wave I have seen. Is this still a problem? If it is, the level must be resuced and the output relocked.

Fmak:I don't think this is a problem with the X-Fi.
The only time I got a really buggy SPDIF out was when I was using Intel HD Audio drivers with an onboard codec instead of the manufacturers drivers. I got a distorted and badly clipped SPDIF. See my other post in this thread. We're having two conversations at the same time! ;o)
Ive been using the same Xfi extreme music card for some time now, I used the spdif output to a Zhaolu 2.5 dac. Im surprised you had good results with the Spdif output on his card Presto, I was pretty disapointed with it. My dac sounds far better when driven from my modded marantz cd67 then it does with the Xfi. Im wondering if it might be the cable im using, its a deent quality cable from Bluejeanscable.com but the problem is that I have to use an rca-> spdif adapter on one end to get it to conect to the Xfi. I think Ill get a cable made up with the 1/8 plug on one end and see if this helps.
Frank25:What mode are you running the SPDIF output in?
I am using Audio Creation Mode, ASIO mixer, set to "bit matched". Slider level = 75% (0db) and Master volume level = 100%. Output plugin is Otachan ASIO for Winamp.
Sounds no worse or better than my other "cheapy" SPDIF solutions. In fact, I find it sounds even better than my M-Audio Revolution 7.1 SPDIF output, which unfortunately does NOT have ASIO support.
Oh yeah - "bit matched" mode disables all effects except for EAX. You need to disable this effect manually even in ASIO/bit matched mode.
The biggest problem with the X-Fi is learning how to shut everything off! ;)
I have mine setup identical to yours only I use Foobar instead of Winamp. Yea it took me a while to figure out how to make sure all the crap was turned off:)
