If controlling volume level from computer is there a signal loss when lowering volume, a loss of bites? If not would a DAC direct to amp be the the best and simplest method? Experiences?
Follow Ups:
If you play at loud levels, I'd think of skipping the preamp.
You'll save lots of messy electronics in the chain.I still own a TVC (S&B TX102), which is said to sound like a
piece of wire. These people havn't really listened to a 2 inch piece a silver wire!! ;)Keep also in mind per 6db attentuation you'll loose 1 bit resolution.
You'll limit the danymic range by doing it the digital way.
I could even skip the coupling caps of my DAC.
Transient response will be great!Make sure that you find a player supporting 32 bit float DSP for volume control, such as J.River. That's better than standard
PC Volume control.Chears

DAC to amp is obviously one component less that can impact the sound. However volume control is a real problem. There are a couple of solutions out there that combine a DAC and an analog volume control. I am running my Lavry DA10 directyl into my amps and that works great.
