The audio stack is all the same across these different packages. The Ultimate SKU adds the decoders required for DVD playback.
The mixer, volume control, and all the room/speaker correction features are implemented in 32bit floats. This pass is not bit transparent but the quality is much much higher than it was in XP.
Vista adds a new audio API alled WASAPI that corresponds to something you might have heard about as exclusive mode audio. This API provides low latency bit perfect pass through for one application directly to the sound card.
As an example the latest version of Ntrack (5) supports this new API and I exepect all self respecting layer applications will follow.

Great info Thomas. I just upgraded to Vista, chiefly because of the audio. Anyway, could you comment on what is involved in accessing the API WASAPI, or is it something that is set up default with Vista. I have a Creative Labs Audigy ZS.I have my soundcard output set to 16 bit 44Khz, through the vista drivers I found at the Creative Site. Am I good to go, or is there something else I should be looking for?
I've searched forums etc. for the past month, and information on Audio for Vista is practically nill. Now if I was looking for how "great Vista looks", that wouldn't be a problem:)
I assume your drivers are good to go but you still need to find a player application that is actually using the WAS APIs (why do I always think of green raddish).Ask the question on the forum for your favorite player application and let us know what they repsond.
Cheers
Well, I posted on the Windows Vista forum and on the Windows Newsgroup forum and never got any replies. If I hear something in the futre I'll let you know. Maybe some info will surface over time. As for now I'm pretty satisfied with everything, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.Thanks again.
