In Reply to: Anyone using a UMPC as an interface/remote control? posted by Dave in gva on February 1, 2007 at 11:34:41:
Gang,So can you use something like the Nokia N800 as remote terminal into a say a headless pc?
Follow Ups:
My understanding would be yes, Gordon. While the Nokia N800 and 700 are Linux based, they allow use of a web browser and there are any number of remote control softs that can sit on a host server (the headless PC with the music) that allow that PC to be accessed through an internet session.
I'm hoping prices on UMPCs come down from their current $1,000 mark and will follow the Vista developments for a while. Microsoft has made available their Origami Experience which is a Vista interface that is optimised for the UMPC class of devices. The music accessing interface for that does look very nice. I believe it requires one to run music through Windows Media Player version 11.
Not sure whether there is an audio quality hit if using WMP versus something like Winamp or Foobar, iTunes etc. If not, I could see accessing a music server via the Origami interface as an attractive option.
Link to the interface below.
Dave, BTW your email address is bouncing. Thanks for responding to my question on AA for remote desktop. I need to
look into that more and try some of them out. I actually was looking for a
real VNC and a cheaper tablet. I think many of the linux solutions are
taking the open source and recompiling for each system.Vista: Thomas PFemming kinda spilled the beans on Vista. For months he was
stating that all the problems with KMIXER are gone. Then about 2 weeks ago
he said that the Audio Stack converts everything to 32 bit floating point
then up/downsamples to whatever the device is looking for. When asked 2 times... no response. Which means to me that Microsoft is the
same old company.
Hi Gordon, weird about the email I'll look into it.I believe Remote Desktop is built into XP directly and is meant to be very simple to set up. I've not used it and am only concerned about how it handles things like wake on LAN and the loss of screen real estate that I assume comes with looking onto another computer's desktop through a window - even a maximized one.
On Vista I have seen the 32 bit floating issue as well....but does this mean that even in the so called exclusive mode this is happening?
Thanks,
Dave,It looks like I found several VNC Clients for the N800. Looks like that will work for me.

There is a interesting topic on Creative's board on Vista. The problem as I see it is that from the application the data is converted to floating point 32 bit mode. After the mixer takes over it is converted again back to what ever the output stream is.
In a sense this should not be a problem. But from an ethical state it just pisses me off. Just leave it alone... the mixer is not required and only going to screw things up.
Thanks
Gordon
