Hi,
I'm getting distortion from Itunes on some specific CD's, but not all, burned in Apple Lossless or WAVE. Any thoughts?MAC Mini

I had this problem. I was using an iBook G3, and an older version of iTunes. When I replaced the iBook with a MacBook, the problem disappeared. Could it be the speed of the processor? The amount of RAM ( My MacBook has 2 Gb as opposed to the iBooks 128Mgb)? Or the version of iTunes?
You're ripping these albums? from your CD collection to your computer, and THEN they sound distorted? They don't sound that way in CD form?ontrack2@gmail.com suggested turning OFF sound check, but if you're not using it, maybe you should try it. It definitely smoothes out the hotly mastered albums for me. sets all albums to the same level too.
Turn off all of the hyperbole settings.Modern CD's are mastered with over the top levels. If you also have the "Sound Enhancer" and "Sound Check" settings turned to on, this will just aggravate the situation.
ITunes> Edit> Preference> Itunes> Playback> (Sound check/Sound Enhancer)
Some modern CD's simply ARE distorted. They are being manufactured with levels seeking +10dB and have no place to go so audible clipping and flat line amplitude while time is progressing is the result.

Interesting,That wiki link you posted actually mentions that the "Sound Check" function is to smooth out highly compressed music. I'm playing with it a bit now. I've always left those things off for purity purposes but i am going to play with them a bit. It's definitely calmed some of my hotter albums.
In other itunes news, it appears that the "sound enhancer" function is being used by none other than Ry Cooder when mastering his albums. pretty funny.

The Ry Cooder thing seems to me to be "loss of artistic focus"So, if his album is played back with the 'enhancer" the double enhancement will make it twice as good! (Shhhesh..
Whatever happened to doing the job properly for all systems involved. I don't want my systems sounding like it has the 'enhancer switch on" with little to no way to 'undo it'.
