Hey Gang:Would it be possible to use two or three *identical* USB devices simultaneously?
I'm betting if the .ini driver files are modified to have unique device names...
Well? What do you guys and gals think?
Follow Ups:
Preston,I could reprogram the dacs to different names and that would make it much easier.
I wonder about say using one of these hub 2.0 chips and 4 usb dacs with SPDIF output if then you could link them up as one unit to work 7.1 or lesser stuff?
Yea like I need another idea in my head :)
Gordon:I am not sure multiple USB (or even PCI devices) is the way to go.
To get multiple digital streams out right now, the best bet is a multi-channel DIGITAL soundcard with no dacs, (RME, Lynx AES) but you're stuck with SPDIF or AES/EBU. Now we're talking very good quality outputs, but the format is what it is.
Another method I am looking into is on-the-fly encoding into DTS 96/24. Six channels of 96/24 that can be decoded by a decoder at the other end. This could work if someone was interested in digital amps like the Panasonic XR line - since one could then use 6 channels in one amp instead of 2 channels in each of THREE amps. Very wasteful to use stereo spdif inputs into an amp with 6 channels of equal power when you need... SIX CHANNELS!
Anyways, don't mind me. I'm always doing wierd convoluted things.
It's just more fun that way!
Presto,Yes RME or Lynx would work fine for seperate digital output. Actually even the analog out's not bad as long as you warm it up somewhere else.
The problem with DTS and computers is that they are streaming right from content. I don't know of any way to say do your xover thing then to integrate it back into a single DTS stream. So I think that is out.
I do have somewhere a simple bus powered USB-> SPDIF convertor. I kinda designed it in a couple hours. Not really what I would call stellar stuff.
Anyway... just some thoughts for your obcession.
Thanks
Gordon

I've had two HagUsb devices working on the same machine. Only problem is figuring out which is which in the dialog boxes. They both say "USB Audio Device".
Three USB game controllers works simultaneously. It's just difficult to know which one to pick sometimes in the software program as they all have the same name.Three USB soundcards or anything that requires you to hit "play", will not work. You'd have to hit "play" on three different player windows, so the sync is off.

I would be using ASIO4ALL and Audio Teknika's Console to map the output channels from my VST crossover to the appropriate sound card.
You are correct, you can only use one player, but this is what I would be doing...
Player -> 3 way DSP Crossover -> (Low USB device + Mid USB device + High USB device)My question was really just to find out if the three USB devices would work simultaneously. I already got the mapping cased.
Try plugging in two USB mice - they both work independently.
This has some definate possibilities for bi-amped and tri-amped systems!Trick is to mod the .ini/.inf files so that identical devices at least "show up" as different devices in the device managers and other gui's where the devices would need to be differentiated.
Yee-haw! This weekend is going to be fun !!
It might work as long as the new driver names matches in every file that may contain the driver info. Many applications may call on USB...I'm thinking you could check your reg file to see how many times it would show up and under what app's.
.
Dynaudio:You are running stereo (2 channels), requiring one USB DAC.
I want to run THREE IDENTICAL PCI or USB solutions SIMULTANEOUSLY for a total of 3 stereo pairs (six channels) for DSP/Active tri-amping.
Same devices (USB). Different quantities(3 not 1). Different application. (Tri-Amping - not passive).
