I have been lurking here and know this is the future. I have a nice CDP (MF Trivista) that has a RCA 16/44.1 digital input. Its audio out board is first rate with 4/5703 submini tubes and a hefty low impedance analog output. Bt how good really is the D/A I wonder. I can setup a system to use this easily but should I? I guess what I want to know is can I get great sound out of a PC from a sound cards digital out or should I start over with a different DAC that uses another output method? It would be cool to be able to playback 24/96 without downconverting after I make recordings and also to play 32 bit FLAC files "native" and so on. Can something do this fairly easily or would it be a hassle? Or if you were me you would ________. Thanks in advance.

"playback 24/96 without downconverting after I make recordings"Are you talking about upsampling redbook CD's, or recording SACD/DTS/HDCD material. If the latter, I do not think the PC will be able to read those formats.
I do some recording and can go upto 24/96. Many PC sound cards have a digital 24/96 in/out. My current CD/DAC setup(Trivista CD/SACD w/digital input) cannot read anything but 16/44.1 I think although it upsamples. I 'll keep reading, thanks.
In your case you should look for a converter from USB to S/pdif to feed your MF Nuvista Dac. Haggermann makes one, there is a company on A'gon that is selling something. You come out of the USB port right into the converter.Ideal, no but cost effective until you stash away the money for a Wavelength Crimson USB DAC.Then rip some discs in one of the lossless formats and enjoy.
There are plenty of PC soundcards that have S/PDIF out at upto 24/96, maybe higher now. I just got an old card for $5 out of a junk box and it has digital out S/PDIF at 16/44.1 and by default that digital out has a volume control. I don't know if it can be bypassed. I read it is better without volume in the digital realm. Is there some advantage to using USB over the soundcards output? ? Also you wrote "Then rip some discs in one of the lossless formats and enjoy" By lossless on redbook CD you mean the native 16/44.1 right? Thanks in advance.
