i have never tried one, but I dont think the DAC would know or care if the data is coming from a computer or a transport or anything else....Meaning I am sure it will work the same, if not better with a laptop [while on battery] than a unit plugged into the wall.

Thanks. I am thinking about purchasing a new dac since I am having trouble with my current setup.I used to have a Dell Inspiron 9200 with a digital coax out connecting to my Audio Alchemy Ultra Dac then to my KRK powered monitors.
The problem started when I swapped for a new Dell laptop Inspiron 9400 that does not have digital audio out. I purchased an M Audio Transit to convert USB to Toslink then send signal to AA Dac. The sound quality has completely changed for the worse. The sound is distorted with pops and clicks. The windows .wav files are crackling at the beginning of every file. Music has lost its clarity and bass response.
Any help would be appreciated for a computer audio newbie. Thanks.
Hey BJBACKLE, Im looking to setup a similar system to yours. PC/DAC/Active monitors. I was wondering with the dac connected to your active monitors can you still control the volume from your PC?? Or do you have to put some sort of pre-amp or volume control between the speakers and dac??
I can control the volume using the windows volume control. The master is bypassed, but you can still adjust using the individual controls; wave, cd, Mic, etc.. My monitors also have gain control to adjust gain. This worked very well with my old system, but this new setup is not so easy. I am getting loud noises. I would suggest posting a thread about your inquiry. Let the experts answer your question with confidence as I am still not sure if this is a good route. :)
Brad
sounds like it might be a buffer issue....I know you can adjust your buffer settings on Foobar and other media players....I betting you could search through some threads hear and find someone's post who had the same problem and someone responded with a solution.
