I would disagree with the statement, "Internet radio is cool for the variety of music....but its only suitable for back ground music at best."I am finding excellent sources of music I like via the internet these days and have done so for the past 2+ years. You do have to spend some time sorting out what will work best but, IMHO, its worth the time. Sources such as KSCM, KPLU, WGBH, KUSC and www.Radioio.com are excellent sources of high-bit-rate streams for classical and jazz. Some include live DJs as well.
I do agree with the suggestion to go with a decent outboard DAC directly into the stereo system. There are so many choices, however, that it can be overwhelming as are the options for its configuration.
I do some streaming of digital audio from a network drive here at the house but I find that I spend far more time running the streams and get exposed to far more music I didn't know I liked that way. I do not consider it background music, though. Occasionally, I'll even pick up my sax and play along.
Cheers,
Follow Ups:
I am using the Squeezebox 3 feeding an external dac with great results. I listen to radioio jazz and love it. The sound quality is exceptionally good.
David,Yes there are a lot of internet radio stations out there, I need to take the time to find some good ones I guess...
....you've got to check out Danish Jazz radio. I've been listening to this station for a couple of years, and their variety is outstanding.I love KCSM as well. Great programming all the time.
I've found a few more streams from Europe both Classical and Jazz.Another one for the favorites list....
Cheers,
