Based on the posts of various inmates, I just bought a Lynx l22 sound card for its analogue out. It is very clear and certainly beats my old Chinese DAC, but it sounds slightly harsh to me. Does it smooth out with break in? If so how long does this take?
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the info. The sound has already started to smooth out after about 12 hours. It may have helped that I downloaded the current drivers.
What could I expect from better cables? The sound is already extremely detailed. I can see why some of the inmates think it beats much more expensive stand-alone dacs. I would be interested in experimenting with cables if it added even more analogue-like palpability and weight. Tuckers, what is the name of your company's cables? First, though, I want to hear what it sounds like after a few weeks of break in. I don't think I would want to experiment with mods. This sounds risky.
I suggest trying foobar or winamp, And various versions of Kernel streaming, direct sound, etc. Just read back through the forum _grin_Different things will sound good on different setups.
I am using a Lynx two-B, as are others here - supposed to be same as L22 except more analog outs.
My best sound so far is without question - direct sound in Winamp -
But with other posters, that doesn't seem to be the case. This stuff is still somewhat in it's early years and it takes a bit of trying various things to work out what is best with your setup and tastes
Yes, it will break in, it can take a couple of weeks. What cables are you using? This can affect sound quality. Also, different music players sound different, some sound harsh.
You are using the right player. We make our own cables for it. Zoalla makes an improved cable that's pretty nice.Give it time.
I disagree with fmak about the opamps and output capacitors, both are superior to what's in most DACs. You can remove the output capacitors, but of course it voids the warranty, and makes it less stable with certain outputs. Lynx has done a lot of research and listening to the output caps and the op-amps in this design.
If Lynx has spent time on output electronics, why do they then supply such cheap cables to use with them?
I am using J. River Media Center 11. So far I cannot make it work with Windows Media Player. It burps and chirps. I am using the stock cables into an rca silver lace interconnect via an adaptor. What cables do you recomend?
Your output opamps and coupling cap probably contribute to the sound.
Change them if you can. Sound cards use pretty cheap and not very good stuff. There is no point in using an expensive cable until you sort the output electronics out.
