That's about the sum of it - get a few seconds of play and them crash. Works fine with direct sound but I would like to try Kernel streaming
Follow Ups:
I spoke too soon - it's still crashing.
What kernel streaming output plugin are you using? The original from Chun-Yu? Or the updated one from Steve Monks?
The new one (out_ks3.zip) from Steve Monks is available here:

(This is assuming you are running the latest greatest Winamp 5.3.1.)
Hi Presto - I think I've solved it by disabling Skype. I'm using the lates app and plugin version as well. After some listening I think it sounds better than direct sound - distinctly better. I'm running an M-Audio 2496 audiophile soundcard feeding an SPDIF signal synched at the sound card to a mildly moded ART dio.
Trackside:Kernel streaming is good. It does bypass the kmixer in NT/XP.
ASIO does go to a "lower level" (hardware level) of the soundcards driver, but this does not mean kernel streaming is a lesser approach.
I avoid directsound (and waveout) like the plague.
Cheers,
Presto
